MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The University of Montevallo softball team fell to No. 19 Auburn University at Montgomery 1-0 in game three of the weekend series on Sunday afternoon. After a weekend sweep by the Warhawks, Montevallo is now 14-22 overall and 10-17 in Gulf South Conference play.
A solo home run in the third inning was the game-winner for the Warhawks.
After
Mariel Bertossi was hit by a pitch, Montevallo's first hit of the game came in the fifth inning when
Alexis Cortez singled up the middle to put runners on the corners. Cortez stole second to put runners on second and third with one out, but UM could not find a way to bring them home.
The Falcons had another chance in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game, but could not find a way to bring anyone across home plate.
Sierra Easterwood and
Hannah Carey got things started with back-to-back singles to lead things off in the top of the seventh. Two quick outs after that left UM with one more chance.
Avery Witten earned a walk to load up the bases, but a ground out in the next at-bat ended the game.
In the loss,
Mychael McMillan gave up one earned run and four hits while striking out nine. Carey, Easterwood, Cortez and
Brooke Ingram each hit 1-for-3.
UP NEXT: The Falcons will travel to Birmingham-Southern College to face the Panthers in a non-conference doubleheader starting on Wednesday, April 28 at 4 p.m.
