Box Score 2 BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Montevallo softball team split Wednesday evening's doubleheader at Birmingham-Southern 12-3 and 3-5 in a non-conference matchup. BSC is currently the No. 6-ranked team in Division III softball. UM is now 15-23 overall and 10-17 in Gulf South Conference play.
Montevallo gained the lead in the top of the first on a
Hannah Carey single to right field that scored
Brooke Ingram to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead.
UM would add two more in the top of the third on a
Fallon Groves single to right field that allowed Ingram to score once again.
Sierra Easterwood then came home on a wild pitch to make it a 3-0 game.
BSC got two back in the bottom of the third thanks to a two-run homer.
The Falcons responded by exploding for five runs in the top of the fourth inning to take control. Easterwood knocked a single up the middle that brought
Sydnee Pawlak and
Callie Ryan across home plate. Two batters later, a double down the left field line from
Hannah Carey allowed
Holly LaForce Henderson and Easterwood to score next. In the next at-bat,
Avery Witten hit a single in the left center gap to send Carey across home plate and put the Falcons in front 8-2.
The Panthers got one run back in the bottom of the fifth to make it 8-3.
Montevallo got the bats going once again in the top of the sixth inning and drove in four more runs. After back-to-back singles from Groves and Carey, a
Lauren Higginbotham double to right field allowed
Monet Milligan to score with no outs.
Lauren Hamby then roped a triple down the right field to line to send Carey and Higginbotham home. With two outs,
Bryana Freshour singled to second base, allowing Hamby to touch home plate and make it a 12-3 game.
Carey led UM at the plate in game one, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
Fallon Groves also went 3-for-4 with one RBI, Easterwood went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and Witten and Higginbotham each went 2-for-4 with one RBI apiece.
In game two, it was Birmingham-Southern who opened the game's scoring in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.
Montevallo briefly took the lead in the top of the fourth by scoring two runs. An Alexis Cortex sacrifice fly to center field brought
Sawyer Martin home to even the game at one.
Georgia Hughes then singled to left field, advancing Higginbotham to third where she would score on an error to give the Falcons a 2-1 lead.
BSC responded by scoring four runs in the home half of the fourth thanks to two two-RBI singles that put the Panthers ahead 5-2.
Montevallo had the go-ahead run at the plate in the sixth, but could not quite even the score.
Kinley Adams singled to left field in the sixth inning to send Hughes home and cut the deficit to two runs, but the Falcons would leave runners stranded on second and third to end the inning. The Falcons got a baserunner in the top of the seventh that brought the tying run to the plate, but were not able to do any damage to the Panthers' lead.
Martin was the only Falcon in game two to have multiple hits, going 2-for-3.
