MONTEVALLO - If there was ever a perfect definition to "insult to injury", Exhibit A would be the Sunday afternoon at Varsity Field, as the Montevallo women's soccer team took 4-1 loss to Mississippi College. The Falcons fell to 2-3 and 0-2 in the Gulf South Conference with the setback. The Falcons were also slipped to 0-3 at home. Meanwhile, Mississippi College improved to 4-1 and 2-0 in the GSC.
If it could go wrong, it did. Mother Nature was truly unkind, pelting the area relentlessly, causing brutal conditions on the pitch. The torrential downpour also caused the live stream of the game to shut down with 20 minutes left.
Dani Avelar and Holly Pascoe each had a pair of goals for the Lady Choctaws, while Erin Hederman had three assists. Emma Young and Julia Murdoch also combined for an assist on one of Pascoe's two goals.
Chloe Spradlin had the lone goal for the Falcons.
Mississippi College led 1-0 at halftime, courtesy of Avelar's first goal in the 20th minute (19:19). Then, as the rain began to pour mercilessly, so do the Lady Choctaws. Avelar added her second goal in the 68th minute (67:38) to give MC a 2-0 lead. Less than two minutes later, Pascoe netted her first goal of the game and third of the season to give the Lady Choctaw's a 3-0 lead with just over 20 minutes left. Hederman assisted on all three of the goals. Pascoe's second goal of the game capped the scoring for MC in the 77th minute (76:43).
The Falcons avoided a shutout when Spradlin scored an unassisted goal in the 89th minute.
Next up: The Falcons will try to get back on track this weekend in another pair of GSC matches. On Friday, UM travels to Memphis to face Christian Brothers. Then, the Falcons head over to Jackson, Tenn. to take on Union University..
