Falcons Fly Past Francis Marion to Earn First Home Win

MONTEVALLO - Freshman Marica Miljanovic scored twice and added an assist as the Montevallo Falcons rolled past Francis Marion University 4-0 on Wednesday at Varsity Field. The Falcons evened their record at 4-4 with their first home win of the season, while Francis Marion fell to 2-6.

"It was good to get our first win at home and get back to winning ways," said head coach Jake Wyman.  "Thought the girls started really well, and created a lot of chances in the first 20 minutes.  They showed a lot of character and desire today.  We've experienced a bit of a 'split personality' this year with our performances.  All four of our wins we've defended really well and kept clean sheets and we've given up some soft goals in our defeats."

Miljanovic wasted little time getting the Falcons on the board, scoring just 1:23 into the game. Heather Gomez and Miranda Fragoso teamed up on the assist to give UM a 1-0 lead. Then, in the 6th minute, Miljanovic redirected a ricochet past the diving Lady Patriots goalkeeper to make it 2-0.

In the 15th minute, Miljanovic found Kaeri Ward streaking a past a FMU defender, and Ward found the back of the net for the third goal of the game for the Falcons. UM wasn't done as Allye Darnell took a pass from Espy Sanchez and scored in the 32nd minute.

"Two wins in a row is certainly a positive response from the group.  We've got quite a few new faces seeing major time so consistency in our performances is something we've got to have going forward.  We'll take the coming days to get ourselves as healthy as possible and get gearing up for the 2nd half or our season," continued Wyman.

FMU managed only two shots in the entire game, while UM was relentless in their assault with 24 shots. The Falcons had 10 shots-on-goal to one for the Patriots.

Next up: The Falcons host Spring Hill in a Senior Day Gulf South Conference match on Friday, Oct. 8 at Varsity Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
