MONTEVALLO - The Montevallo women's basketball team took care of business in the first match of the new year, advancing past Shorter 86-56 Sunday afternoon in Trustmark Arena. With the win the Falcons are now 6-8 and 2-4 in GSC play with the Hawks slipping to 1-7 and 0-6 in conference.
Senior guard
Kiya Sain led the Falcons with 24 points with four rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Sain shot 9-13 from the field with a season high 6-8 from three. Shorter guard Jasmine Gaines led the Hawks with 24 points, five assists, four steals, and three rebounds.
The Falcons took control early in the game with a 7-0 run to ignite the Montevallo score. UM was in control at the end of the first period with a 22-10 lead headed into the second.
Montevallo stayed aggressive in the second quarter extending its lead to 21 in the first 5:44 of the period. The Falcons ended the half with a 14-3 run to take the Hawks 49-19 by halftime.
Shorter battled but the Falcons remained in control for the duration of the game, with the Hawks not getting closer than 29 for the rest of the game.
