Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | by Jayden Presley

WIN THE STATE: Falcons outlast West Alabama 78-61 at home

MONTEVALLO - Junior guard Marisa Snodgrass led the Montevallo women's basketball team to victory over West Alabama with a season-high 24 points, shooting 66.7% (6-9) from downtown. Montevallo won 78-61 to improve their record 8-11 and their GSC record 4-7.

As a team, the Falcons had a near-flawless night at the free throw line, making 96% (24-25) to put the Tigers away.  Shyan Flack added 16 more points to the pile, and eight rebounds to the winning effort..

The Falcons and the Tigers started off with an offensive back and forth, with West Alabama finishing with a 23-22 lead at the end of the first quarter.

UWA's Bria Dent, one of the Tigers's leading scorers, left the game with an injury at the beginning of the second quarter. The Falcons still had an offensive drought during the first half of the second, but guard Jennifer Andrew knocked down both free throws from the charity stripe to break free.

Montevallo finally challenged UWA's lead midway through the second quarter with a three pointer from Flack, tying the game 27-27.  With a total of nine lead changes and seven ties in the first half, the Falcons turned up the heat with three consecutive steals from guard Jordan Jones, helping make way for a 43-33 halftime lead over the Tigers.

Montevallo started the third quarter rough with two turnovers. The Tigers crept within ten points as the Falcons started allowing second shots and out-of-position fouls on the defensive end. Offense remained stagnant after several attempts to make something happen, but UM managed to maintain the lead 48-43 for most of the third quarter.

A controversial foul call at the end of the third put Savannah Lee at the line for two more points, and Montevallo stayed ahead 58-49. The Falcons would not budge on defense in the fourth quarter, blowing out the Tigers with the largest lead of 17 points.

UP NEXT: The Falcons will return to the court next week on Wednesday, Jan. 26 in Huntsville against the University of Alabama in Huntsville Chargers. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
