Falcons edge CBU 84-80 in Trustmark Arena

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - Senior guard Kiya Sain was honored for her 1000-point basketball career with the Montevallo women's basketball team before the nail-biter against the Christian Brothers Buccaneers. The Falcons slid past Christan Brothers  84-80 with guard Marisa Snodgrass leading her team with 24 points and 9 rebounds, scoring 6-9 (66.7%) from the three-point line. Forward Shyan Flack added 14 points and clutched 10 rebounds, and forward Jennifer Andrew pitched in with 11 points.  With the win Montevallo advances to 10-11 with a 6-7 record in the GSC and the Bucaneers slip to 6-14 and 5-9 in conference.

The Falcons struggled to take control for the first quarter, turning the ball over six times, failing to rebound or go after a loose ball on the defensive end. Unable to finish shots around the basket also put the Falcons behind 14-22 in the first quarter.

The Buccaneers kept increasing the lead as Montevallo fought to keep up with transition for the second quarter. The Falcons finished the half 8-28 (28.6%) from the field and the Buccaneers 14-40 (35%), an offensive drought for all, keeping the Falcons under 30-35.

Montevallo came out in the third quarter bothering shots on the defensive end, toughening up to outrebound the Buccaneers 28-19. The Falcons put the Buccaneers on their heels as they generated turnover after turnover. Snodgrass knocked down a three to finally put the Falcons ahead 48-46. Montevallo led for the final few minutes of the third quarter, but the teams decided with a tie (58-58).

The Buccaneers opened with three consecutive shots from downtown to pull ahead 67-61 and stayed there for most of the fourth quarter. The Falcons weren't going down without a fight. Snodgrass again pulled the Falcons ahead 78-76 with another pull-up three. The Buccaneers had no choice but to foul to slow the clock down, and the Falcons delivered from the charity stripe to keep the lead.

As a team, Falcons were 25-61 (41%) from the field and 7-19 (36.8%) from behind the three-point line. The women Falcons improved their record 10-11 and 6-7 in the GSC.
