MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The Montevallo men's basketball team shot a sizzling 64% from 3-point range in the second half en route to a 75-65 win over in-state foe Alabama-Huntsville on Thursday evening in Trustmark Arena. With the win, the Falcons improved to 7-8 and 5-2 the Gulf South Conference, while UAH fell to 9-6 and 2-4.
Four Falcons scored in double-figures, led by guard Xavier Malcom who led all scorers with a game-high 23 points. Malcom knocked down 8-of-15 fieldgoals, including seven from downtown. Braxton Bertolette hit four 3-pointers and finished with 17 points. Meanwhile Travarus Carroll tallied 16 points, six rebounds and five assists and Aaris-Monte Bonds contributed 10 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots.
CJ Williamson led UAH with 16 points. Dalton Dodd added 13 points, while Max Shulman scored 11 and Chaney Johnson 10.
The Falcons held the GSC's leading 3-point shooter, Luke Burnett to only eight points. He was 2-for-7 from beyond the arc. As a team, the Chargers struggled from the perimeter, hitting on 6-of-20 attempts.
The Falcons trailed 35-32 at the half after a less than stellar first 20 minutes. After the Chargers scored the first bucket of the second half to go up by five, the Falcons started to find a rhythm from behind the arc hitting three consecutive 3-pointers to key a 9-0 run. The trifecta of rainmakers put UM ahead 41-37 with 16:54 left.
UAH temporarily stopped the rally with a 3-pointer by Burnett, but Bertolette answered with back-to-back bombs to give the Falcons a 47-40 lead. Later, the Falcons pushed its lead to 11 with 9:09 left in the game when Malcom hit a pullup jumper in the lane, giving UM a 60-49 lead. The Falcons would lead by as much as 17 points before settling for the final victory margin.
The Falcons are scheduled to head west to Memphis, Tennessee for another GSC dust-up against Christian Brothers. Tip-off is set for 3:00 PM on Saturday at Canale Arena.
