HOOVER, Ala. - Montevallo Volleyball snapped a three-game win streak to the defending National Champions, No. 4 Tampa, 3-0, at the Finley Center in Hoover, Ala., Friday afternoon.
In the Falcons' opening game of the Gulf South Conference/Sunshine State Conference Crossover tournament, UM battled, despite falling 3-0 (26-28, 20-25, 12-25).
A strong .371 hit percentage carried the Spartans to the win while the Falcons hit just .165 in the match.
Junior
Allie Dishman proved strong for Montevallo with a game-high 11 kills at a .438 clip.
Montevallo went the distance the first set, pushing Tampa to the brink, but falling 28-26. Both teams battled throughout with neither side holding larger than a three-point lead.
Jillian Morgan put the Falcons ahead 12-9 following a kill. With the Falcons ahead 18-15 late in the set, Tampa used a 4-0 run to take a 19-18 lead. Both sides traded points the rest of the way in the set until Tampa scored back-to-back points to win, 28-26.
In the second set Montevallo opened strong and led 4-1 following a Spartan attack error. A 10-4 run gave Tampa a 11-8 advantage. After falling behind 17-12, the Falcons battled and cut the lead to two, 21-19 following a block from
Morgan Hoffman. The Spartans held off UM the rest of the way, taking the second set 25-20.
The beginning of the third set was back-and-forth, before Tampa used a 7-0 run to break a 9-9 tie and lead the Falcons 16-9. UM managed just three points the rest of the set, falling 25-12 and 3-0 in the match.
The sweep is only the third of the year against UM and runs Montevallo's record to 15-7 overall.
