Montevallo Falls Short to No. 13 West Florida

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo Volleyball team fell to No. 13 West Florida, 3-0, on Tuesday, in Trustmark Arena.
 
Montevallo held leads over the Argonauts in each set but were unable to hold on in the end, falling 22-25, 23-25, and 21-25.
 
Overall there were 28 ties and 16 lead changes throughout the match. Montevallo jumped out to a 6-1 lead to start the first set and led 12-7 following a Morgan Hoffman kill. An 8-2 West Florida run pushed the Argos in front, 15-14 for their first lead of the match. With UWF up four, 19-15, the Falcons used a 5-0 run, capped with a Hoffman kill, to re-take the lead, 20-19. A 3-0 run put the visitors up 22-20 and back-to-back kills gave West Florida the first-set win, 25-22.
 
In the second set, Montevallo opened with an early lead, 5-3, after Aliyah Thompson recorded a kill. Montevallo held a slight lead most of the second set until a UWF kill and service ace pushed the Argos in front, 22-20. UM wouldn't go away quietly as Kamble Frenette, Allie Dishman and Macy Martin each recorded a kill to push the Falcons back in front, 23-22. Two Falcon errors and another West Florida service ace gave UWF the set-two win, 25-23.
 
Following two tightly-contested sets, the Argonauts opened the third set in front, 4-2. UM worked out of the deficit and took a 9-7 lead following a kill from Frenette. West Florida responded with a 7-1 run to tie the largest the lead of the match, 14-10. Montevallo was unable to tie or take the lead down-the-stretch, falling 25-21 in the set.
 
Despite pushing West Florida to the brink, the Falcons were unable to take a set from the 22-win team.
 
UM hit .330 in the match, the highest hit percentage since Sept. 17, but were unable to hold back UWF as the squad hit .330 – the fourth-highest mark against the Falcons this year.

  • Macy Martin, Kamble Frenette, Allie Dishman, and Aliyah Thompson all led the Falcons with nine kills apiece.
  • Frenette hit team-high .538 in the match.
  • UM held an advantage in blocks, 6-4, and were narrowly edged in service-aces 8-7.
  • Kills made a difference in the match as UWF recorded 49, compared to 42 for the Falcons.
  • Five service aces hurt UM in the match while the Argos committed just three.
  • Colton Thompson led Montevallo with 18 assists and a team-high nine digs. She also recorded a team-leading three service aces.
 
Up Next: The Falcons will hit the road to take on UAH on Friday, Oct. 8, at 6 p.m. in Huntsville, Ala. UM can clinch a spot in the GSC Tournament with a win.
