Comeback Bid Falls Short for Falcon Ladies in Loss to West Florida

MONTEVALLO, Ala. -- The Montevallo women's basketball team played chase all night long, but wouldn't overcome the visiting West Argonauts in a 76-74 loss on Thursday night. The loss snapped a 4-game winning streak for the Falcons, who slipped to 11-12 and 7-8 in the Gulf South Conference. Meanwhile, West Florida improved to 16-6 and 10-5 in the GSC.
 
The loss overshadowed an outstanding performance by senior forward Savannah Lee who scored a career-high 29 points and grabbed nine rebounds. She was 9-of-18 from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers, and 9-for-11 from the freethrow line. Junior guard Marisa Snodgrass added 14 points and four assists, while with senior guard Jordan Jones contributed 11 points.

Jaclyn Jarnot paced West Florida with 22 points and 15 rebounds. Charlotte Ellmore added 19 points, and Zoe Piller tallied 11.
 
The Falcons stumbled out of the blocks, falling behind 11-0 early. However, when they finally got on the board, it ignited an 8-0 run that would slice into the deficit. Unfortunately, the Argonauts answered with an 8-0 run of their own to finish the quarter with a 19-8 lead.

UWF heated up in the second half and stretch their lead to 17 at 34-17 with 5:18 left. Again, the Falcons responded in the final five minutes, outscoring the Argos 11-1 the rest of the quarter to cut the lead in half 35-28 at halftime.
 
Snodgrass opened the second half by knocking one down from downtown, trimming the deficit to four at 35-31, but the Argonauts answered quickly with a 9-0 run to take a commanding 44-31 lead with 8:04 left in the third period. The Falcons tried several times to bite into the UWF lead, but were repelled each time. But, the Falcons didn't give up easily.
 
Trailing 72-59 with a little over three minutes left, the Falcons made one last run at the Argos. UM outscored UWF 13-4 down the stretch. Jones buried a 3-pointer to cap the run and cut the deficit to two points, but the clock read 00:00.
 
The Argonauts finished the game, shooting 51% (25-for-49) from the field, compared to UM's  29% (20-for-69). West Florida also had better touch behind the three-point line, shooting 43.5% (10-for-23) overall compared to the Falcons' 28.6% (8-for-28).
 
Next up: The Falcons will host Valdosta State on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. It will be Senior Day for six UM seniors will be playing in their final home game.
