MONTEVALLO, Ala. -- The Montevallo women's basketball team were left with an empty feeling after being soundly beaten in the final home game of the season, 74-42 by Valdosta State on Saturday. The loss dropped the Falcons to 11-13 overall, but most importantly, 7-9 in the Gulf South Conference. Meanwhile, VSU improved to 14-2 in the GSC and 19-4 overall.
The nightmare began shortly after the Falcons honored their six seniors,
Jennifer Andrew, Tiara
McCleod,
Kiya Sain,
Shyan Flack,
Savannah Lee,
Jordan Jones and
Alyssa Williams during the pregame ceremonies. Once the game tipped off, the fun was over. The Blazers outscored the Falcons 25-12 in the first quarter and 24-6 in the second to blow the game open. VSU carried a 31-point (49-18) lead into the locker room and never looked back.
The Falcons tried to mount a comeback early in the third quarter, trimming the huge deficit down to 22 points. A.K. Eastman knocked down a 3-pointer with 6:29 left in the third quarter to make it 51-29, but VSU quieted the rally with six consecutive points to open the bulge back up to 31 points. The Blazers led by as much as 35 points before settling for the final margin of victory.
Eastman and Jones were the high scorers for UM with only six points apiece. The Falcons offense had its worst game of the season, shooting only 25% from the field, including 5-for-26 from beyond the arc.
For the visitors, Nicole
Heyn led VSU with 32 points and 12 rebounds, while
Kwajelin Farrar tallied 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Next up - The Falcons, who are still in possession of the final spot in the GSC tournament field, head to
Carrollton, Ga. for a rescheduled game against West Georgia on Valentine's Day. The game was postponed earlier this season due to COVID concerns. Earlier, this season, the Falcons defeated UWG in a non-conference game at Trustmark Arena, 79-69 in the first home game of the season.
