MONTEVALLO - The Montevallo baseball team claimed a shutout, series opening victory over Missouri-St.Louis by a final score of 11-0 Friday night at Bob Reisner Stadium. With the win the Falcons climb to 4-0 this season, while the Tritons take a loss in their season debut.
The Falcons pitching staff combined to allow just five hits, and threw a school record 18 strikeouts to help the Falcons blank the Tritons. Montevallo kicked things off with a three-run homerun during
Jake Smallwood's first at bat, to give UM an early 3-0 lead. The game was silent for the next three innings, until
Asa Awbrey stepped up to the plate and hit another home run with
Ben Teel on base, to bring home the Falcons fourth and fifth runs.
The Falcons came back with a three-run home-run off the bat of
Riley Cain during the following at bat, igniting a comfortable 8-0 lead over the Tritons. Montevallo put home another run during Cain's next AB in the bottom of the sixth, after he doubled to center field to bring
Ben Teel across home plate for UM's ninth run. A
Ben Teel double down the left field line brought home
Evan Liddie, with
Khalid Collymore sneaking home after an error from left field to notch the Falcons final two runs.
Gino Cozzi was on the mound to take the win for the Falcons with 10 strikeouts and four hits during five innings of service.
