MONTEVALLO - The Montevallo women's basketball team scraped past the Delta State Lady Statesmen 70-69 in a road game nail biter, Saturday afternoon. With the win the Falcons inherit a 12-15 overall record and a 8-11 Gulf South Conference record while the Lady Statesmen slip to 11-12, and 9-9 in conference play.
The game was competitive from the moment the ball tipped off as both teams notched a 10-10 tie with 5:26 left in the first quarter. The Falcons ended the period behind the Lady Statesmen 18-16.
Delta State pushed their lead as high as 28-21 in the second period but Falcons battled to cut the margin to 32-30 by halftime. The Falcons were scrappy in the third but the Lady Statesmen managed to restablish an eight point lead, taking a 61-53 margin over UM into the fourth.
The Falcons sparked the fourth quarter with seven unanswered points to bring the game to a 61-60 DSU lead. The Falcons tied the game 67-67 with 2:35 left after
Marisa Snodgrass found Tiara McCleod for a turnaround jumper. DSU's Moriah Hurst regained the edge 69-67 for the Lady Statesmen after sinking a jumper from outside of the paint with 1:36 left in the game. Snodgrass completed a key steal with 00:21 left that allowed
Kiya Sain to tie the game 69-69 on a fast break lay up. The game would come down to freethrows as
Marisa Snodgrass went 1-for-2 to seal the game winning point.
The Falcons were led by
Kiya Sain who scored 22 points with nine rebounds, an assist, and a steal.
Tiara McLeod played a major role in the Falcon win, contributing a career high 16 points with five rebounds, and three steals.
UP NEXT: The Falcons will match up against in-state rival Auburn-Montgomery for the final game of the regular season. Tip-off is slated for Saturday, February 26th at 2:00 PM in Montgomery.
