OXFORD, Miss. - The Montevallo softball team rolled over Delta State 13-1 in five innings in their Gulf South Conference opener on Friday. The Falcons improved to 7-5 and 1-0 in the GSC, while DSU fell to 6-7 and 2-2.
Pitcher
Mychael McMillan improved to 3-0 with the win. She worked three innings, allowing three hits, striking out six and walking two.
Hannah Carey was 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, two RBIs and she scored three runs.
Sierra Easterwood,
Taylor Robinson,
Alisha Lanyon and
Carlee Mullinax all had two hits each. Easterwood homered, scored twice and drove home four runs. Mullinax had a pair of doubles and two RBIs, while Lanyon doubled and drove home three runs.
The Falcons jumped on the Statesmen quickly, scoring three runs in each of the first two innings. In the first inning, Easterwood and Robinson led off with back-to-back singles. Carey drove Easterwood home with an RBI double, then Robinson scored on a ground-out to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead. Carey later scored on a sacrifice fly by Lanyon.
In the second inning,
Kinley Adams scored on an error to make it 4-0. Then, Lanyon plated two more runs with a 2-run double, giving the Falcons a 6-0 lead.
The Falcons added another run in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Carey. Then, the Falcons exploded in the top of the fifth inning, posting up six more runs. Most of the damage was done by Easterwood would smashed a grand slam in the inning. Mullinax also had an RBI double in the Falcons onslaught that ended with a 13-0 lead.
Next up: UM and DSU will meet again for a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon beginning at noon at mTrade Park in Oxford, Mississippi.
