Despite Homeruns, UM Softball is Swept in Home Opener Against UAH

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MONTEVALLO, Ala. --- The weather was absolutely beautiful and the Montevallo softball team hit four home runs, but it wouldn't be enough as Alabama Huntsville spoiled home-opening day for the Falcons with an 11-1, 7-4 sweep on Wednesday afternoon at Orr Park. The Falcons fell back to .500 with the losses at 7-7, while UAH improved to 13-4. Though the games were against a Gulf South  Conference opponent, they did not count in the standings.

In the first game, the Falcons managed only four hits. The lone highlight came in the fifth inning when Kinley Adams tripled and scored on an RBI single by Sierra Easterwood. The run allowed the Falcons to avoid the shutout. Mychael McMillan (3-1) suffered her first loss of the season. She worked 3 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on six hits. She left with three strikeouts and two walks.

Game two had the Falcons jumping out to an early lead on the strength of a pair of homers. Easterwood led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo shot over the left field fence. Then, two outs later Alisha Lanyon launched a moon shot out to left-center to give UM a 2-0 lead.

UAH tied the game with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning, then plated two more in the fourth inning to take a 4-2 lead. The Falcons broke out the big bats in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two runs to even the score. Carlee Mullinax led off the inning with the third solo blast of the game for the Falcons that cut the UAH lead to 4-3. Two outs later, Lauren Hamby took one over the left field fence that tied the game at 4-4. The Falcons had a chance to jump back in front when Adams followed Hamby's homer with a double to get into scoring position. But, Easterwood flew out to end the inning.

The Falcons had another golden opportunity in the fifth inning with runners on second and third with one out, but were unable to bring the runners home. The Chargers capitalized in the top of the sixth inning scoring twice on five hits to take a 6-4 lead.

UM had another opportunity in the bottom of the sixth inning with a pair of baserunners and the big bats coming to the plate. However, Easterwood and Taylor Robinson both struck out to end the inning.

UAH added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning to make it 7-4. The Falcons tried to mount a rally in the bottom of the seventh as Hannah Carey led off the inning with a double, but the next three batters went down in order to end the game.

The Falcons had 11 hits in the game, led by Adams who was 3-for-3 at the plate with a double. Mullinax also had multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with her first home run of the season.

Kaylee Hawkins (2-3) took the loss in the circle for the Falcons. She pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowed six runs, four earned on 11 hits. She also had six strikeouts and a walk.

Next up: The Falcons travel to Georgia for a three game GSC series against No. 3 Valdosta State on Saturday and Sunday.
