VALDOSTA, Ga. --- A walk-off grand slam shattered the hearts of the Montevallo softball team on Sunday as 3rd-ranked Valdosta State rallied to snatch away a 6-5 win. The Falcons fell to 7-10 and 1-3 in the Gulf South Conference with their fifth straight loss, while VSU improved to 16-4 and 8-0.
Mychael McMillan (3-4) took the loss for the Falcons. She allowed three runs on two hits and a walk. McMillan was one of three Falcons to take the circle on Sunday.
Kaylee Hawkins started the game, working 4 1/3, while
Mabry Norris came on in relief in the fifth inning and pitched a 1 2/3 innings.
Offensively, the Falcons finished the game with 10 hits, including a home run and two doubles.
Hannah Carey and
Carlee Mullinax had two hits apiece. Carey homered, had one of the doubles and drove in three runs, while
Sierra Easterwood had the other two-base hit and an RBI.
The Falcons struck early, scoring a run on Carey's RBI double in the first inning. UM added to the lead in the third inning when Easterwood scored on an error to make it 2-0.
VSU cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third inning on a solo home run. But, Carey went deep in the fifth inning with a 2-run shot to give the Falcons a 4-1 lead. In the sixth inning, Easterwood gave UM a 5-1 lead with a sacrifice fly.
Another VSU solo homer cut the UM lead to 5-2 going into the seventh inning. After the Falcons were unable to add insurance in the top of the inning, the Blazers loaded the bases with a pair of walks and an infield single, setting the stage for the game-ending grand slam.
Next up: The Falcons return home to host Georgia Southwestern State University in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, March 9 at Orr Park. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
