Falcons Snap Losing Skid with Pair of Dramatic Wins Over Georgia Southwestern

MONTEVALLO, Ala. --- The Montevallo softball team won a pair of heart-stopping wins against Georgia Southwestern State on Wednesday 6-5 and 7-6. The Falcons won both games with walk-off hits. With the wins, UM snapped a five-game losing streak and improved to 9-10.

Next up: The Falcons will host Christian Brothers in a three game Gulf South Conference series on Saturday and Sunday. Due to forecasted wet weather, The Falcons and Buccaneers will play one game on Saturday at 2 p.m. and a doubleheader on Sunday starting at noon.

GAME 1

After giving up a solo homer in the top of the first inning, the Falcons answered with two of their own in the bottom of the innings to take a 2-1 lead.

Sierra Easterwood led off with a triple, then scored on a sacrifice bunt by Kinley Adams. Later in the inning, Adams scored on a double steal to give UM the lead.

The Hurricanes came roaring back in the second inning, stringing together three consecutive doubles and plating two runs to reclaim the lead at 3-2.

In the fifth inning, Georgia Southwestern second baseman Zoe Willis hit her second homerun of the day to give the Hurricanes a 4-2 lead. The Hurricanes added another run on a solo shot by Isabel Marcotte, leaving the Falcons with a 3-run deficit heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.

Left fielder Alisha Lanyon got the rally started with a lead-off homer to cut the deficit to 5-3. Right fielder Georgia Hughes followed with a double to bring the tying run to the plate. Lindsy Smith delivered with pinch-hit single between first and second base, scoring Hughes and making the score 5-4 and setting the stage for Easterwood's walk-off bomb over the left field fence.

Easterwood finished the game 2-for-4 with a triple, her seventh homerun of the season, and two RBIs. Lanyon was 1-for-3 with her second homer of the season.

Kaylee Hawkins (3-3), who came into the game in the second inning to relieve starter Kaitlyn Flugga, pitched 5 2/3 innings to earn the win. She allowed two runs on six hits, struck out three and walked three.

GAME 2

The Falcons carried the momentum of the dramatic win in the first game into a red-hot start, posting five runs in the bottom of the second inning.

Georgia Hughes got the rally started with a 2-run double. Hughes scored on an RBI double by Sydnee Pawlak. Then, Sierra Easterwood smashed a two-run homer, her second of the day and eighth of the season, giving the Falcons a 5-0 lead.

The Hurricanes rallied with a run in the third inning, two more in the fifth and a pair in the sixth to tie the game up at 5-5.

Then in the bottom of the sixth inning, Carlee Mullinax led off with a walk. Pinch-runner Olivia Bergert moved over to second on a sacrifice by Alisha Lanyon, then stole third. She scored the go-ahead run on a ground-out by Lauren Hamby, just sliding under the tag at the plate.

The Hurricanes battled back to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning. But, in the bottom of the inning, took advantage of a pair of walks to get runners in scoring position. Then, with two outs, Mullinax ripped an RBI single into left field and Easterwood raced around from second base with the game-winner.

Hughes, who got the start in right field after coming off of the bench in the first game, led the Falcons with two hits. She also had a double and two RBIs. Easterwood drove home a pair of runs with her home run.

Mabry Norris improved to 3-3 with the win in the circle. She pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowed a run on two hits, struck out two and walked one.
