MONTEVALLO, Ala. --- The Montevallo baseball team took the first of three games in a Gulf South Conference game against West Florida on Friday night, beating the Argonauts 11-5. With the win, the Falcons improved to 24-8 and 9-6 in the GSC, while UWF slipped to 17-11 and 12-4.
Next Up: The Falcons and Argonauts cap off the three game series with a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Pitching
Gino Cozzi (5-3) was the winning pitcher. He worked five innings, allowed two runs on five hits, struck out nine and walked three.Â
Falcons Leaders
The Falcons piled up 16 hits against UWF pitching.
Jake Smallwood led the way, going 4-for-5 at the plate with a homer and three RBIs.
Will Pratt was 3-for-5, while four other Falcons had two hits apiece.
Asa Awbrey was 2-for-5 with a triple and an RBI.
Sam Kuchinski was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Reed Latimer was also 2-for-4 with a homerun and three RBIs and Brook Cooner was 2-for-3 with a solo homerun.

The Falcons got on the board with an RBI double by

A pair of homeruns helped the Falcons build a 5-0 lead. A 3-run blast by
Reed Latimer was followed by a solo shot by
Riley Cain.
Bottom 4th
The long balls continued as
Brooks Cooner hit a solo bomb to increase the lead to 6-0.
Jake Smallwood added an RBI single that gave UM a seven run cushion.
Top/Bottom 6th
West Florida got on the board with a pair of runs to cut the UM lead to 7-2, but the Falcons got one of the runs back on a sacrifice fly by Cain that scored Smallwood.
Top/Bottom 7th
The Argonauts rallied with three runs in the top of the inning, cutting the lead to 8-5. However, the Falcons rebounded in the bottom of the inning with three runs.
Asa Awbrey had an RBI triple, then Smallwood drove in his second and third runs of the night on a 2-run homer to cap the scoring for the Falcons.
