Falcons sweep doubleheader against Mississippi College on the baseball diamond

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MONTEVALLO, Ala. --- The Montevallo baseball team rebounded from a loss in the opening game of a Gulf South Conference series against Mississippi College to sweep the doubleheader and take two out of three games. The Falcons blew out the Choctaws in the first game 16-4 in seven innings, then took the rubber game 7-5. With the wins, UM improved to 30-11 and 14-9 in the GSC, while Mississippi College fell to 13-27 and 7-17 in conference play. 

Next Up: The Falcons return home to host Tuskegee University in a non-conference game at Bob Riesener Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.

GAME 1
The Falcons offense woke up and laid waste to the Choctaws in the opening game, getting 13 hits, including three home runs and four doubles.

Pitching
Trey Felker (3-1) was the beneficiary of the offensive explosion. He pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief of starter Jake O'Connell. He allowed one hit and walked one batter. 

Falcons Leaders
Reed Latimer torched MC pitching, going 4-for-4 at the plate with a home run, double and six RBIs. Jake Smallwood and Matt Simon had three hits apiece. Simon was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI., while Smallwood was 3-for-5 with a double, homer and RBIs. 

Key Plays:

1st Inning
The Falcons came out swinging, scoring three runs in their first at-bat. Jake Smallwood scored the first run on an infield single by Reed Latimer. Two more runs scored on an error, giving UM a 3-0 lead. The Choctaws responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-3 lead.

2nd Inning
Smallwood put the Falcons back on top with a 2-run homer.

3rd Inning
The Falcons posted four more runs to extend their lead. The big blast came off ot the bat of Asa Awbrey who smashed a 3-run home run that gave UM an 8-4 lead. Matt Simon added another run with an RBI single that gave the Falcons a five run cushion.

4th Inning
The scoring barrage continued as three more runs crossed the plate for UM, making the score 12-4. Latimer knocked in a run with an RBI double and later scored when Will Pratt reached on an error. Sam Kuchinski also scored on a sacrifice fly by Awbrey.

7th Inning
The Falcons put an early finish to the game, adding four more runs to end the game.


GAME 2 - Montevallo 7, Mississippi College 5

Pitching
Connor Phelan improved to 3-1 with the win. He was the fourth pitcher to take the hill for the Falcons and worked two innings in relief. He allowed a run on two hits and issued a walk. 

Falcons Leaders
Reed Latimer, Sam Kulchinski and Riley Cain had two hits apiece. Latimer had a home run and two RBIs, while Cain doubled and drove in a run and Kuchinski also had an RBI. Ben Teel homered for the Falcons and Jake Smallwood had a triple and an RBI.

Key Plays:

1st Inning
Sam Kuchinski got the Falcons on the board when Alex Langford scored on his ground-out.

3rd Inning
Ben Teel hit a solo homer to give UM a 2-0 lead. But, the Choctaws rallied with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-2 lead.

4th Inning
Each team scored a one to make it 4-3 headed into the fifth inning.

5th Inning
Asa Awbrey tied the game, scoring on a wild pitch. Then, Riley Cain doubled down the left field line, scoring Will Pratt and putting the Falcons back in front at 5-4.

7th Inning
Reed Latimer gave the Falcons some breathing room with a 2-run homer. MC scored a run on a solo homer, but the Falcons held on for the win.
