UM Baseball Team spit a doubleheader at West Alabama on Saturday afternoon

LIVINGSTON, Ala. --- The Montevallo baseball team avoided a sweep at the hands of West Alabama on Sunday with a 5-1 win in the final game of the three game series. The Falcons earned a split due to an 11-7 loss in the first game of the doubleheader. The Falcons finished the weekend at 27-10 and 12-8 in the Gulf South Conference, while UWA improved to 10-26 and 8-12 in the GSC with the split. 

Next Up: The Falcons return home to host Miles College in a non-conference game at Bob Reisener Stadium on Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. 

GAME 1
West Alabama 11, Montevallo 7

The Falcons committed three errors in the game.

Pitching
JJ Pease (4-3) took the loss for the Falcons. He started the game and lasted 1 2/3 innings. He allowed four runs on seven hits, while striking out one and walking one. 

Falcons Leaders
The Falcons had 11 hits in the game. Four players finished the game with two hits each. Asa Awbrey was 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs. Reed Latimer was 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs, while Sam Kuckinski had a solo homer with a pair of hits. Riley Cain also had two hits in four trips to the plate.

Key Plays:

1st Inning
The Falcons struck first, scoring two runs in their first at-bat. Reed Latimer had an RBI single and Sam Kuchinski scored on a walk with the bases loaded.

UWA answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning and two more in the second to take a 4-2 lead.

Top 3rd
Latimer hit a solo home run to cut the deficit to 4-3.

UWA plated two more runs in the bottom of the 4th and one more in the sixth to extend their lead to 7-3.

7th Inning
Asa Awbrey made it 7-4 with a solo shot, but the Tigers answered with four in the bottom of the inning to take a commanding 11-4 lead.

Top 8th and 9th
Two runs scored in the top of the eighth inning on an RBI single by Awbrey and Kuchinski hit a solo homer in the ninth, but the bole was too deep to climb out of.

GAME 2
Montevallo 5. West Alabama 1


Pitching
Griffin Lape was the winning pitcher for the Falcons. He came in to relieve starter Logan Samuels in the fifth inning. Lape (2-0) pitched two hitless innings and striking out three batters. Danny Glenos earned his third save of the season after coming in to end a Tiger rally in the bottom of the seventh inning. 

Falcons Leaders
Reed Latimer and Jake Smallwood had two hits each. Both of Latimer's hits were doubles and he had an RBI. Sam Kuchinski alsa hit a home run and drove in a run.

Key Plays:

Top 1st and 2nd
The Falcons jumped out to an early lead with a pair of runs in their first at-bat. Sam Kuchinski opened the scoring with a 2-run home run. Then in the second inning, Smallwood, who scored on Kuchinski's homer, delivered an RBI single that gave the Falcons a 3-0 lead.

Top 5th and 6th
Latimer had a double that scored Kuchinski. Then Moore scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Simon that make it 5-0. 

The Tigers tried to rally but, they wouldn't generate any offense in the final inning.
