MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo volleyball team split a pair of matches on the opening day of the 2022 season, Friday, at the Indianapolis Tournament.
In the first contest of the day, Montevallo swept host Indianapolis University, 3-0. Just a few hours later, Montevallo played its second match of the day and fell to No. 17 Wayne State, 3-0. Despite being swept by the Warriors, Montevallo competed in each set, losing 25-21, 25-18, 25-21.
Allie Dishman led the way with 21 total kills on opening day.

- Preseason All-GSC selection Allie Dishman led the Falcons with 13 kills while hitting .480
- Junior Jillian Morgan added eight kills while sophomore Kamble Frenette and senior Morgan Hoffman each added six.
- The Falcons setter duo of Sav Roys and Colton Thompson combined for 33 assists while Roys led the way with 18.
- Junior Casey Hendrixson anchored the back row with 16 digs while fellow junior Macy Martin added 13.
- Dishman and Hoffman led the Falcons' defense at the net, recording three block-assists each.
- Both sides totaled 42 kills in the match but the Falcons edged the host squad with a .207 hit percentage, compared to a .184 mark by the Greyhounds.
- Aces were a difference maker as Montevallo outscored UINDY 8-3 behind the line. Roys led the Falcons with three service aces.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1
- After battling early in the set, Montevallo fell behind 15-9 following an 8-2 Greyhound run.
- A Dishman kill capped a 5-1 run for Montevallo, cutting the deficit to 16-14.
- Aliyah Thompson gave the Falcons a 21-19 lead, capping a 5-0 run, with her second kill of the set.
- A service ace from Hendrixson sealed the set win, 25-22.
Set 2
- UM fell behind in the early goings of the first set, 6-3, before Frenette put the Falcons ahead 9-7 with a kill, capping a 6-0 run.
- Both squads traded points before a Dishman service-ace finished off a 3-0 UM run, giving the Falcons a 14-11 advantage.
- After a few tightly contested points, Montevallo broke ahead 22-18 when Morgan capped a 5-0 run.
- Martin's kill secured the set win, 25-21 and put the Falcons up 2-0 in the match.
Set 3
- In a back-and-forth third set the Falcons fell behind 16-15 until back-to-back kills from Martin and Hoffman put the team ahead 17-16.
- Four straight points down the stretch put the Falcons just two points away from a season-opening win, 23-18.
- Kills from Frenette and Dishman secured the set-win 25-22, completing the sweep.

- Montevallo opened the second set on a roll, scoring the first five points.
- Wayne State used its own scoring burst to take a 9-7 lead.
- Big continued to be a theme as six straight put the Falcons back on top, 13-9.
- A 7-0 ensuing run from the Warriors put Montevallo behind 16-13.
- Wayne State led the rest of the set, winning 25-18.
Set 3
- Three consecutive service aces from Colton Thompson gave Montevallo a 7-4 lead to start.
- Frenette pushed UM ahead 11-7 with a kill.
- A late 3-0 run from the Warriors put the Falcons behind 20-18.
- Another kill from Frenette and an attack error for the Warriors evened the set, 21-21.
- The No. 17 ranked team in the nation scored four straight points to win the set, 25-21 and beat the Falcons 3-0 in the match.
