Falcons Take Down UWA 52-47 on the Road

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of Montevallo women's basketball team defeated West Alabama, 52-47, on its home floor, Wednesday, in Pruitt Hall, to move into a tie for fifth in the Gulf South Conference at 6-6 on the season.  
 
Montevallo fell behind 41-40 with 6:12 remaining in the game but held UWA scoreless for next 4:35 and used an 8-0 run to re-take the lead, 48-41. A layup from McCarley Northway initiated the run and gave the lead back to UM, 42-41 at the 4:55 mark.
 
A 4-0 run for the Tigers made it a three-point game, 48-45, with 55 second remaining. Following a defensive stance, A.K. Eastman drained a pair of crucial free-throws to extend UM's lead to five, 50-45. With 3.7 seconds remaining, Leisha Steger sealed the 52-47 win with an and-one bucket.
 
With a seven-point lead at the break, Montevallo extended its lead to 11 in the third quarter, the largest of the game, following back-to-back layups from Northway and Shyan Flack. West Alabama held its largest advantage in the third quarter, however, outscoring the Falcons 19-13.
 
Senior McCarley Northway led the Falcons in points with 11 and on the boards with eight.
 
14 points-from-turnovers for UM aided the Falcons in the five-point road victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
1ST | Neither team shot the ball well to open the game as each finished 0-7 from three-point range. Three free-throws helped the Falcons hold an early 9-8 advantage at the end of the period.
2ND | Montevallo held West Alabama Scoreless from the field over the final 3:17 of the half, only allowing one free-throw, and outscored the Tigers 7-1 to close the quarter.
3RD | West Alabama outscored the Falcons 19-13 in the third quarter. Montevallo led by as many as 11 in the quarter but held just a one-point lead, 35-34, following 13-3 UWA run.
4TH  Montevallo outscored the hosts 17-13 in the fourth quarter and shot 40 percent from the field.
 
GAME NOTES 
  • McCarley Northway led the Falcons with 11 points and eight boards while Shyan Flack contributed eight points and seven boards off the bench in her first game of the year.
  • Marisa Snodgrass added nine points and dished out a team-high four assists.
  • Neither team shot well from the field but UM narrowly edged UWA in field goal percentage 32.1 to 30.6.
  • Montevallo shot just 21.7 percent from three-point range but held UWA to 9.5 percent.
  • West Alabama won the rebounding battle, 47-39, and 14-8 on the offensive glass.
  • Each team committed 12 turnovers but Montevallo scored 14 points-from-turnovers, compared to just eight for the Tigers.
