Falcons Grab Third-Straight Win With 57-50 Victory Over UWG

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo women's basketball team moved up into fifth in the conference standings after notching a third-straight win with a 57-50 victory over West Georgia on Jan. 14.
 
The Falcons fell behind early after UWG jumped out to an 8-0 lead with 6:51 left in the first quarter. Shyan Flack and Marisa Snodgrass went on an 8-0 run by themselves to tie the game at eight. A layup from Miriam Oldacre gave the Falcons its first lead of the game at 12-10. The Wolves hit a bucket with 32 seconds remaining to even the game at 12 after one. Montevallo struggled from the field in the second quarter, scoring just nine points on 21.4 percent shooting. The Falcons trailed by six heading into the break. Savannah Cook rattled off eight points on 3-for-4 from the field with Michaella Edwards knocking down a pair of threes to give Montevallo a three-point advantage heading into the final ten minutes. The Falcons got hot to open the fourth quarter with an 8-0 run to push the lead to 12 at the 6:12 mark. UWG cut the lead down to three after a pair of free throws found the mark with 3:18 seconds left to go. Anna Katherine Eastman knocked down a pair of free throws with 21 seconds on the clock to pull away from the Wolves by ten and eventually give the Falcons the victory.
 
In Flack's return to Trustmark Arena, the senior totaled six points on 30 percent from the field with five boards and three blocks in a limited 18 minutes. Snodgrass was the Falcons top offensive performer with a team high 12 points on 2-of-7 from the floor and 6-for-10 from the charity stripe. The senior guard also recorded six assists, six steals, and two boards while drawing a staggering eight fouls. Cook also put together a solid performance with 11 total points after shooting 4-for-9 from the field and 2-for-5 from deep.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1st | A back-and-forth first quarter saw both teams knotted at 12 with Shyan Flack leading the charge with six points in the quarter.
2nd | The Falcons struggled to find a groove offensively shooting just 21.4 percent in the quarter while West Georgia's 60-percent shooting mark propelled the Wolves to a six-point lead at the half.
3rd | Savannah Cook popped-off in the third quarter with eight points on 3-of-4 from the floor while Michaella Edwards added a pair of threes to give the Falcons a three-point lead heading into the fourth.
4th | Montevallo stretched its lead to as many as twelve points in the fourth quarter on its way to a seven-point win.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Montevallo forced a season-high 28 turnovers and converted those into 26 points compared to just eight points off turnovers from the Wolves.
  • The Falcons bench put in some quality minutes, outscoring UWG's bench 26-11.
  • Montevallo's largest lead in the contest was 12, with the Falcons going on a 14-point run in the second and third quarters combined.
  • The Falcons got out and ran with 15 fast-break points while holding the Wolves to just two.
  • Montevallo was nearly automatic at the free throw line, shooting 70.6 percent (12-for-17).
