Falcons Drop Matchup With VSU, 79-67

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo women's basketball team dropped a home, conference contest to Valdosta State, 79-67, on Monday, Jan. 2. 
 
The Falcons jumped out to an early lead after a pair of three-point bombs from Michaella Edwards and McCarley Northway. Freshman forward Savannah Cook added a pair of threes for a team-high six points as Montevallo carried an 18-11 lead into the second quarter. Anna Katherine Eastman caught fire from deep in the second with three three-pointers for a game high nine points in the quarter. A 66.7 shooting percent carried the Falcons to a 38-35 advantage heading into the half. Valdosta State's offense found a spark in the third quarter, going 7-for-13, while Montevallo struggling to find points with just a 4-of-12 shooting mark. The Lady Blazers held a slim 57-55 lead heading into the final ten minutes. Valdosta State raced out to a 10-0 run to start the quarter that would eventually prove to be too much for the Falcons to overcome. With a three at the 5:24 mark in the fourth quarter, senior guard Marisa Snodgrass surpassed 1,000-career points.
 
A trio of Falcons scored at least ten points lead by a standout performance from Savannah Cook with a team-high 15 points on 5-for-11 shooting. Eastman and Northway joined Cook with 12 and 10 points, respectively, on a combined 7-for-14 shooting.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
 
1ST | Montevallo jumped out to an early lead with a pair of threes from Edwards and Northway to along with a stellar start from the freshman Cook with six points in the first quarter.
2ND | Eastman lead the charge for the Falcons with a game-high nine points in the second quarter on a perfect 3-for-3 from range.
3RD | The momentum shifted in the third quarter with the Falcons offense struggling to find points while Valdosta State shot an impressive 53.8 percent. 
4TH | The Lady Blazers opened the fourth quarter on a 10-0 run that proved to be too much for the Falcons to overcome. 
 
GAME NOTES
 
  • Snodgrass reached the 1,000-career point milestone with a three at the 5:24 mark of the fourth quarter. 
  • Cook scored a career-high and a team-leading 15 points on 5-of-11 from the floor. 
  • The Falcons struggling with the Lady Blazers size as VSU held a 34-16 advantage in points in the paint. 
  • Montevallo's bench stepped up once again with 27 points compared to VSU's 24. 
  • Valdosta State won the turnover battle, 21-18. 
  • The Lady Blazers shot a perfect 17-for-17 from the line with the Falcons shooting 68.8 percent at the charity stripe.
