Falcons Race Past AUM, 80-58

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo women's basketball team earned a dominant 80-58 victory over in-state foe Auburn Montgomery on Saturday, Jan. 7 behind a career night for McCarley Northway.
 
Montevallo got out to a slow start in the first quarter shooting just 27.8 percent from the floor while AUM shot an impressive 63.6 percent from the field. The Falcons' free throw shooting (6-for-6) and eight points from Marisa Snodgrass lifted Montevallo to a 19-16 lead heading into the second quarter. The second quarter was a defensive battle that saw both teams shoot less than 35 percent from the floor. The Falcons managed to knock down a third of their shots (6-for-18) in the quarter to take a 34-30 lead into the locker room with a perfect 8-for-8 free throw mark in the first half. Anna Katherine Eastman caught fire from distance in the third quarter with a game-high 12 points on a perfect 5-for-5 from the field. In the third quarter, the Falcons shot 50 percent while holding the Warhawks to just 17.6 percent from the floor. Northway and Katie Moore each scored seven points in the final stanza as the Falcons took the quarter, 21-17, and the game, 80-58. 
 
A trio of Falcons reached double-digit score with Northway leading the charge with a career-high 15 points on 5-for-9 shooting and 5-for-5 from the charity stripe to go along with four rebounds and three steals. Eastman and Snodgrass scored 12 and 11 points, respectively, to round out the top scorers for the Falcons. Michaella Edwards would not be denied on the glass with a team-high six boards while adding three assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
1ST | Auburn Montgomery started the game with the hot hand, shooting 7-for-11 from the floor, but Snodgrass and Northway combined for 14 points as the Falcons took a 19-14 lead into the second. 
2ND | The Falcons' defense settled in in the second quarter holding AUM to just three made shots while shooting 6-for-18 on the other end to lead the game 34-30 heading into the half.
3RD | Eastman exploded in the third quarter with a game-high 12 points with a perfect 5-for-5 mark from the field and 4-of-5 from the charity stripe.
4THNorthway and Moore each scored seven points in the closing quarter to help lift the Falcons to a 22-point victory. 
 
GAME NOTES 
  • Montevallo took advantage of AUM's turnovers, scoring 24 points on the Warhawks 28 turnovers.
  • The Falcons held control of the paint with a 32-26 advantage scoring around the rim. 
  • AUM outrebounded UM 46-35 with the Warhawks taking a 14-12 lead in the offensive rebounds. 
  • Montevallo led the game for a total of 32:07 with the Falcons' biggest lead at 23 with 8:30 left in the game
  • The Falcons shot 80 percent (20-of-25) from the free throw line while AUM shot 18-of-20 (90%).
