Falcons Rally From Down 0-2 to Defeat West Alabama on the Road

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo volleyball team fights back from 0-2 deficit to defeat the Tigers in five sets on Wednesday, Oct. 25.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Set 1
  • West Alabama came out hot as they won the first six out of seven points to take a 6-1 lead.
  • Up 11-8, the Tigers went on a 5-0 run with four kills and a service ace.
  • Montevallo claimed back into the set while down 17-9 with kills from Allie Dishman, Macy Martin and Colton Thompson to make it 17-12, then with two attack errors on UWA got the Falcons within three.
  • After a point from the Tigers, UM took the next four points with multiple kills from Martin and a couple errors on West Alabama to come within a point.
  • With the set tied at 21-21, West Alabama won the next four out of five points to take the set.
 
Set 2
  • The Tigers started the second set like they did the first by taking advantage of their excellent serving with four service aces to help them jump to a 12-6 lead.
  • UWA took another three-point swing while up 14-9 to extend the lead to 17-9.
  • Up 20-15, UWA captured a commanding 24-15 lead with three errors on the Falcons and a kill from Johanna Martin.
  • West Alabama won the set off a Falcon service error.
  • Colton Thompson had nine assists in the set.
 
Set 3
  • Down 2-0 in the match, Montevallo played with a sense of urgency as they took their second lead of the match with a kill from Alex Koontz to break an early 1-1 tie in the set.
  • With the Tigers up 4-3, Montevallo took the next four points with kills from Kamble Frenette and Allie Dishman mixed in with errors on UWA.
  • West Alabama quickly battled back to tied the set at 8-8.
  • Back-and-fourth it went as neither team was able to create distance from one another as they exchanged kills until the Falcons took a 17-15 lead.
  • The Tigers took the next three points with two kills and an ace.
  • The Falcons forced two errors to take a 19-18 lead then Dishman served up an ace to force a Tiger timeout.
  • Out of the timeout, West Alabama won the next four points highlighted by two kills.
  • Three consecutive errors on the Tiger gave the Falcons the lead at 23-22.
  • After being tied 23-23, Montevallo won the last two points on a service error by West Alabama while Alex Koontz won the set for the Falcons with a kill.
 
Set 4
  • With all the momentum on the Falcon bench, they stormed out to an 8-1 lead highlighted by kills from Morgan Hoffman, Alex Koontz and Macy Martin with multiple assists from Megan Schram and Colton Thompson.
  • Montevallo was on fire as they swung five straight points while up 8-3 with kills from Koontz and Dishman with an ace from Megan Schram.
  • While down 21-9, West Alabama made a run at the Falcons as they won six consecutive points to make it 21-15.
  • The Falcon lead proved to be too much for the Tigers as Montevallo went on to take the set and tie the match up at 2-2.
 
Set 5
  • The Falcons played their best set of the season by dominating the Tigers with 10 kills out of 15 points in the final set.
  • Senior Macy Martin set the tone for Montevallo with a kill to start a 5-0 run for the Falcons featuring four kills, all assisted by Colton Thompson.
  • The lone point scored by the Tigers came after the UM 5-0 start.
  • Montevallo was unstoppable from here on out as Alex Koontz could not miss with four kills to put away the Tigers.
  • Allie Dishman contributed to closing out West Alabama with two kills during the final stretch.
  • Colton Thompson collected eight assists in the set.

The Falcons will now host Mississippi College in a huge GSC match with postseason implications on Saturday, Oct. 28 for Montevallo's Senior Day inside Trustmark Arena.
