MONTEVALLO, Ala. – In the final game of the regular season, Montevallo women's soccer secured the No. 4 seed and a first-round home match in the Gulf South Conference Tournament following a 2-0 victory over Delta State on Sunday afternoon.
The Falcon attack got out early with three Montevallo shots taken inside the first five minutes of action. Just a few minutes later, senior day honoree
Emily Hounsell came up with their first save of the day in the 13
th minute.
Montevallo nearly found a first-half lead with a shot from the foot of
Angelina Rivas but her shot was denied by the woodwork.
Graduate defender
Madeline Milby took the Falcons first shot on target in the 30
th minute with
Lainey Farabaugh,
Isabel Dillehay and
Bailey Raphelt firing shots on target in quick succession. Farabuagh took one final shot of the first half but was denied by the keeper, sending the game to the half at a 0-0 score.
Out of the half, Montevallo struck first with senior day honoree
Kieran Burkey's fourth goal of the season to lift the Falcons to a 1-0 lead in the 56
th minute.
Montevallo looked to add another just moments later with consecutive shots on goal from
Miranda Fragoso and
Marica Miljanovic but both shots were turned away.
Hounsell was forced to re-enter the action with another save in the 76
th minute to keep the Falcons out in front.
Falcon freshman Farabaugh found her fifth goal of the season in the 83
rd minute to secure Montevallo's home-field advantage heading into the first round of the GSC tournament.
