FT Lauderdale, Fla. – The University of Montevallo women's basketball team picks up their first victory of the season and the first in the
Olivia Chapman era on Saturday, Nov. 11 against Nova Southeastern 77-69.
Marisa Snodgrass led the Falcons in the first quarter with nine points off three three-pointers while
Cali Smallwood had eight points as she nailed two threes from deep. The Falcons had the lead for the entirety of the first and had a lead as high as nine points after one of Marisa's three three-pointers. Montevallo would close out the quarter with three-pointers from Snodgrass and A.K. Eastman.
Nova Southeastern started the second quarter with two buckets from three-point range to close the gap to 27-24 but Snodgrass drained another three to end the Shark run. NSU would tie the game up at 30-30 and then would take the lead with a jumper off a fast break then another three-pointer from the Sharks. Both teams would fight to the end of the half but the Falcons edged out Nova to take a 41-39 lead into halftime.
Montevallo would come out of halftime with a 10-3 run with three made jumpers and a three-pointer from freshman
Cali Smallwood. Both teams battled back-and-fourth as the Falcons came out of the third period with a 59-56 lead. UM would shoot 43 percent from the floor in the quarter and would only make one three-pointer.
Two layups made by
Isabel Grimes and
Leisha Steger put the Falcons up by seven to start the fourth then after a 15-footer made by the Sharks,
Savannah Cook buried a three ball to extend the lead to 66-58. Nova Southeastern went on a 7-0 run with two threes and a free throw made to cut the UM lead to 66-65. Tied at 67-67, Montevallo would take another lead with a free throw made by Grimes. From there on, the Falcons went on a 10-2 run to end the game.
