HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1
- Both teams came out firing as the first eight out of 10 points in the match were kills.
- Up 7-5, Valdosta State extended the lead by taking advantage of three Falcon errors.
- The Blazers took their biggest lead of the first set off a kill from Katie Callenberger to make it 17-10.
- Montevallo took the next seven out of 10 points highlighted by kills from Kamble Frenette, Allie Dishman and Alex Koontz.
- UM closed the gap with the Blazers down 21-23 but Valdosta State held on and closed out the set with two kills from Mackenzie Murray and Mallory Roney.
Set 2
- A very competitive second set saw both teams deadlocked at 13-13 until the Falcons won the next six out of seven points with kills by Koontz, Dishman and Frenette while two assists were from Casey Hendrixson.
- Down 16-21, VSU won the last nine out of 11 points to take a 2-0 match lead.
- Montevallo had a 13-11 advantage over the Blazers in kills.
Set 3
- The turning point in the set and match came with the Falcons down 20-12. Kills from seniors Macy Martin and Morgan Hoffman got Montevallo on a roll as they climbed back into the match.
- Valdosta State had match point while up 24-19 but the Falcons showed poise by having their backs against the wall while forcing the Blazers into errors.
- With the set tied at 25 all, Kamble Frenette and Macy Martin saved the Falcons from elimination and forcing a fourth set.
- The Blazers had their most errors for a set in the match with nine.
Set 4
- Tied at 4-4, Montevallo won the next four out of five points with kills from Kalin Duncan and Kamble Frenette, both assisted by Colton Thompson.
- Valdosta State fought back and came within one point at 11-10 with two kills from the Blazers.
- The next four points for UM were kills from C. Thompson, Dishman, Koontz and Frenette.
- VSU took a three-point swing to make it 15-14 advantage UM.
- Montevallo jumped to a 20-15 lead by winning the next four out of five points.
- Valdosta State made a late push by winning three points in a row but a service error gave Montevallo the fourth set while tying the match at 2-2.
Set 5
- Montevallo won the first two points on errors by the Blazers.
- Tied at 6-6, VSU took an 8-6 lead with two errors on the Falcons.
- Um took a 10-9 lead with a kill from Alex Koontz and two attack errors on VSU.
- Valdosta State won the next three out of four points with three kills and an error on UM.
- The Falcons won the last four points in the set to take the match.
