CLEVELAND, Miss. – Montevallo women's basketball held off a late push from Delta State for the first 5-1 start in conference play since the 2019-20 season.
Montevallo got out to a slow start offensively, scoring just six points in the game's first six minutes. The Falcons came out of the first media timeout on an 8-0 run sparked by back-to-back buckets from
Savannah Cook for a quick five points. With
Ramie Reid capping the run with a lay-up in the closing seconds, Montevallo took a 14-8 lead into the second.
With the Falcons' first four points of the second coming from the stripe, another Cook lay-in opened Montevallo's largest lead of the game at 20-10 with 5:15 before the half. A
Marisa Snodgrass triple ended a 7-0 DSU run that trimmed the advantage to three. Another Lady Statesmen run closed the gap to just one but, a late bucket from Snodgrass gave Montevallo a 27-24 lead at the break.
Delta Sate opened the second half with a 7-0 run to regain control in the first two minutes. Delta State capped a 12-2 run for its largest lead of the day at 38-29 before a Snodgrass three sparked a Montevallo run. The Falcons cut the lead down to just two points with 2:42 on the clock but DSU would stretch the lead back to seven by the end of the quarter.
With the Lady Statesmen leading 46-39, Grimes and Snodgrass combined for seven points to tie the game at 46. With the Falcon defense holding DSU scoreless for the first seven minutes of the fourth quarter, Montevallo regained control with five quick points from
Savannah Cook to go up 50-46. Delta State would tie the game with back-to-back buckets, but Montevallo would close the game out at the stripe to start 5-1 in conference play for the first time in four seasons.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1st | The Falcons struggled out of the gate but six first-quarter points from
Ramie Reid and five from
Savannah Cook lifted the Falcons to a 14-8 advantage.
2nd | Marisa Snodgrass led the way for Montevallo with five points and two assists in the second quarter to give Montevallo a 27-24 lead at the break.
3rd | Delta State put up 22 points in the quarter on 53 percent from the field to head into the fourth with a seven-point lead.
4th | Montevallo held DSU scoreless for the first 7:42 of the fourth quarter with Snodgrass closing the game with five points from the line late.
