6 Doubles Lead Falcons to 16-2 Win Over CBU

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Montevallo baseball team defeated Christian Brothers in blow-out fashion, 16-2, in the Falcons first Gulf South Conference contest of the season.

With Logan Samuels getting the starting nod on the mound, the first inning and a half was three up three down for both sides with the first baserunners coming of a CBU walk and single in the bottom of the second. Samuels struck one out looking for the second out of the inning and, after walking the next batter, got the Falcons out of a jam with another looking K.

The Junior right-hander added a second pair of strikeouts in the bottom of the third before Montevallo broke the ice with Reed Latimer's RBI double in the top of the fourth.

Samuels struck out his fifth and sixth batters of the day with two swinging strikeouts with the Bucs at the plate in the fourth.

The Falcons bats found life in with Luke Mitchell's lead-off double in the fifth. After Mitchell advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Jake Smallwood, the red-shirt freshman scored off a Matt Simon single. With two runners on, Barry Eiseman added a pair of RBI with a double down the right field line to give Montevallo a four run lead.

Following a Ben Teel walk, Sam Kuchinski's single into center scored the fifth run of the inning. A bases-loaded double from Asa Awbrey scored all three runners to give the Falcons an eight-run advantage at the change.

A two-run homerun from CBU put the Bucs on the board in the bottom of the fifth.

Samuels's appearance on the mound ended in five innings with the junior giving up two runs on four hits with six Ks in 24 batters faced. Zach Toth took the mound in the sixth to strikeout three with just one hit in the final three innings.

Montevallo's offense wasn't done yet. The Falcons scored eight runs in the eighth for the team's second-highest scoring inning thus far this season. The eighth started with a lead-off double from Mitchell. With the bases loaded after two walks, Eiseman drove in two runs with a single through the right side before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Kuchinski powered one into deep left field for a grand slam and his third home run of the year. A two-run shot from Asa Awbrey (3) lifted the Falcons to a 16-2 win.
