MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The No. 8/10 ranked Montevallo baseball team improved to 12-1 on the year after completing the series sweep over Christian Brothers, Sunday, to open Gulf South Conference action 3-0.
Montevallo opened the day with an 8-5 win in game one and followed it up with an 8-6 win in game two.
JJ Pease and
Reilly Kirkpatrick were dominant on the mound while
Sam Kuchinski stayed hot at the plate as the Falcons increased their run total to 32 on the weekend in the wins.
GAME ONE
The reigning Gulf South Conference Pitcher of the Week,
JJ Pease, earned his second start on the mound and pitched 7.0 scoreless innings, giving up just one win in the eighth while striking out 11.
An early RBI base-hit from
Reed Latimer in the top of the first inning scored
Sam Kuchinski and put UM ahead 1-0. Pease picked up where he left off from his start a week ago in the first by striking out a pair of Bucs from the plate. The senior right hander added five more K's over the next three-innings and continued to hold CBU scoreless.
In the bottom of the fifth, a double from
Ben Teel pushed
Matt Simon home before
Luke Mitchell singled to score Teel and give the Falcons a 3-0 advantage.
A three-strikeout scoreless frame in the sixth from Pease helped the Falcons hold its lead.
Asa Awbrey added an RBI to his weekend in the top of the seventh when he singled to center field, pushing UM ahead 4-0.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, CBU plated three run on a bases-clearing double to trim UM's lead to one, 4-3.
Alex Langford stepped to the plate in the top of the ninth inning and delivered a two-out, bases-clearing triple to give Montevallo a 7-3 lead. An error on a stolen base attempt allowed Langford to score as UM led 8-3.
Christian Brothers plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth but were held off when left handed pitcher
Reilly Kirkpatrick came out of the bullpen to record the final out and earn the save.

- The bats stayed hot as UM plated eight runs on 13 hits in game two of the conference-opening series.
- Sam Kuchinski and Reed Latimer each added three hits, finishing 3-for-4 and 3-for-5, respectively.
- Alex Langford finished 1-for-5 on the day but led UM with three RBI as a result of his triple.
- Ben Teel went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a walk while scoring a team0high two runs.

GAME TWO
Brandon Jernigan earned his first career start in game two of the doubleheader, Sunday, and went one and third innings pitched with one strikeout and no runs allowed.
In the top of the second inning, the Falcons' bats broke loose once again. An RBI single for
Matt Simon scored
Luke Mitchell, then a bases-loaded walk by
Barry Eiseman and a hit-by-pitch from
Sam Kuchinski pushed across a pair of Falcon runners and gave UM a 3-0 lead.
Michael Morse entered out of the bullpen in the top of the second and helped keep CBU off the board.Morse would go on to earn the win, his first of the year.
The Montevallo offense really came alive in the top of the third when
Brandon Moore rifled a two-RBI single to right-center. An ensuing sacrifice fly from the bat of
Ben Teel added the sixth run of the contest for UM. In the next at-bat, Kuchinski knocked his fourth homer of the year and capped off a five-run inning as the Falcons led 8-0.
Christian Brother's pitching staff held the Falcons off the board in the final four innings, slowing down an offense that had totaled 32 runs thus far in the series.
The Bucs rattled off back-to-back three run innings in the fifth and the sixth before
Reilly Kirkpatrick kept CBU at bay by striking out the final batter in the bottom of the seventh to secure an 8-6 win, the series sweep, and his second save of the year.
