MONTGOMERY,
Ala. – The Montevallo women's basketball team completed the 2023 regular season with a 79-63 win over Auburn Montgomery behind a pair of 19-point performances from
Marisa Snodgrass and
Michaella Edwards.
The game began with a back and forth first quarter until the Falcons ended the first ten minutes on a 6-1 run to take a 21-16 lead into the second. Montevallo shot an impressive 53.3 percent from the field (8-of-15) to open the game with
McCarley Northway leading all Falcons early with six points on 2-2 shooting.
Montevallo held its six-point advantage through the first three minutes of the third until the Warhawks opened up a 10-0 run to take a 32-28 lead at the 4:16 mark. With UM trailing 37-32 with just under two minutes to go,
Jordan Parker and Snodgrass scored five-straight points to tie the game at 32 all heading into the locker room. The Falcons offense dipped in the second quarter, going just 6-for-16 from the field, while AUM shot 50 percent in the quarter (7-of-14).
At the half, Northway led all scorers with 10 points on a perfect 4-for-4 from the field as Montevallo shot 14-for-31 (45.2%) in the first 20 minutes.
Both defenses clamped down in the third quarter with neither side gaining an inch. With 1:29 remaining in the quarter, Snodgrass canned a three that ended a 5-0 AUM run and brought Montevallo within one, 51-50. After a free throw from the Warhawks, Snodgrass tied the game at 52-52 with a perfect 2-for-2 trip to the stripe to end the quarter.
The Falcons' offense exploded in the fourth quarter following a 5-0 run from AUM to start the final ten minutes of the regular season. The Falcons outscored the Warhawks 25-6 in the final 6:46 of the game sparked by a deep three from Snodgrass. A pair of free throws from
Shyan Flack gave Montevallo a 58-57 lead that the Falcons never gave up. Edwards added six points at the stripe down the stretch on 6-of-8 shooting to seal Montevallo's 79-63 win to close out the season.
Snodgrass and Edwards both finished with 19 points apiece with a combined 10-of-25 from the floor and a 14-of-17 mark from the charity stripe. Northway also added a double digit performance with 14 points to go along with nine rebounds. Flack posted her first double-double of the season with an 11-point 11-rebounds performance.
Montevallo finished the Gulf South Conference slate as the fifth seed in the GSC Tournament. The Falcons will travel to Valdosta, Ga. on Tuesday, Feb. 28 to take on fourth-seeded Valdosta State at 6 p.m. CT.
