Falcons Split Opening Day Double Header

GULF SHORES, Ala. – The Montevallo softball team posted a 1-1 record on opening day down at the beach in the Gulf Shores Invitational. The Falcons fell to Florida Tech, 12-4, in game one of the day but bounced back with an 8-5 win over Spring Hill.

Fifth year senior Taylor Robinson opened up the season with a one run blast in the top of the first to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. Montevallo's pitching got out to a bit sluggish start against Florida Tech, giving up four runs in the bottom of the first. After four unanswered runs for FIT, Lily Stone powered one to deep center field in the fourth inning for the Falcons second homerun of the game. Two unearned runs came across the plate for Montevallo in the top of the fourth but the Falcons defense couldn't hold off the Panthers charge in the final innings, falling 12-4.

With the first-game jitters out of the way, Montevallo's bats got hot early against Spring Hill. After two runs from SHC in the top of the first, Alisha Lanyon drove in a pair of runs after a bases-loaded single to tie the game at two. Shelby Sloan brought Lanyon and Ellie Derrick into the dugout with a two RBI double to give Montevallo it's first lead of the game. Lauren Hamby hit an infield single to drive in the fifth run of the inning for the Falcons.

In the second, Lauren Higginbotham toed the left field line for a two RBI double to give Montevallo its seventh run of the game. The Falcons homered for the third time of the day with Lanyon smashing one down the left field line for the eighth and final run of the afternoon. Montevallo held its lead through the final three innings for the first win of the season.

In her debut performance, freshman Taylor Lloyd pitched the full seven innings in Montevallo's win over SHC for her first win in a Falcon uniform.

"We did some things well and some not so well," said Head Coach Beth Wade. "We will continue to shuffle the lineup early on and see how the pieces fit best together. As a team, we will continue to work and get better. There were definitely some bright spots today. Taylor Lloyd pitched very well throwing a complete seven innings to get the W in her first career game. A trio of different people hit HR's and several people got their first career hit and RBI in a Montevallo uniform."
