MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo softball team hit nine home runs in a doubleheader against Columbus State on Tuesday night with a 17-14 win in game one before a 17-5 loss in game two.
GAME ONE
After a single hit from both sides in the first inning, the Falcons offense found its rhythm. With two runners reaching on walks, Sloan squared up a pitch for a three-run shot to open the scoring on the day.
Taylor Robinson and
Alisha Lanyon both singles in the next two at-bats and, after a stolen base by Lanyon,
Lauren Higginbotham walked to load the bases. Sophomore
Ellie Derrick blasted a grand slam to put the Falcons on top, 7-0, in the second.
The bottom of the third saw the very same thing when Robinson made the long run after hitting the Falcons second grand slam of the game to give Montevallo an 11-run cushion.
CSU battled back scoring seven in the top of fourth but, Montevallo shut the door quickly with another four runs in the bottom half. Following a Derrick single,
Sydnee Reaves got on the board with a two-run shot. A double from
Lily Stone led to Montevallo's second two-run homer in the inning when Sloan found her second of the day.
Once again, the Cougars didn't go away, scoring four runs in the top of the fifth. Reaves hit her second two-run home run in as many innings to bring Montevallo's total to 17 runs.
Three runs in the top of the sixth and just one hit in the seventh from CSU sealed Montevallo's victory, 17-14.
The Falcons' victory featured a record six homeruns with both
Ellie Derrick and
Taylor Robinson hitting grand slams while
Shelby Sloan and
Sydnee Reaves hit two two-run shots. Sloan and Reaves are the first duo in Montevallo softball history to hit multiple home runs in the same game. Derrick and Robinson are also the first pair of Falcons to hit grand slams in the same game.

- Sloan led the Falcon's offense with a .750 batting average (3-for-4) for five RBI, two homers and three runs scored.
- Reaves batted 2-for-4 with a pair of homers, four RBI and three runs.
- Robinson and Derrick each batted 2-of-4 with four RBI.
GAME TWO
After CSU scored the opening run in the second game,
Ellie Derrick and
Sydnee Reaves blasted back-to-back homers to give Montevallo a 2-1 advantage.
In the third, CSU regained control with a two-run shot before
Taylor Robinson made the score 5-3 UM with a three-run bomb in the bottom half of the inning.
The Cougars tied the game with a pair of runs in the fourth and, with two hits from the Falcons in the next two innings, headed into the sixth tied at 5-5. Columbus State scored 12 in the sixth to take a 17-5 lead.
The Falcons couldn't make up the difference in the final at-bat to take the loss, 17-5.
