No. 7 Falcons Soar Past Hawks 17-4

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The No. 7 University of Montevallo baseball team soared past Shorter, 17-4, in game one of the three game series, Friday, to move to 16-3 overall and 6-1 in Gulf South Conference play.

The offensive onslaught began early as Ben Teel took the first pitch he saw deep out of the park for a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning. Just two batters later, Reed Latimer went yard and put the Falcons ahead 4-0 with a two-run bomb of his own.

Shorter trimmed the lead in the ensuing frame and plated three runs in the top of the second. Montevallo quickly answered the Hawks with three runs in the bottom half of the frame. Jake Smallwood opened the frame with a single before Alex Langford, Teel, Sam Kuchinski and Latimer each recorded singles to push the score to 7-3.

Zach Toth replaced Logan Samuels in the fourth and shut down the Hawks for two straight innings, not allowing a hit or a run.

After a scoreless frame in the third, the Falcon bats exploded in the fourth. The rout began when Teel blasted his second homer of the game, a three-run shot to center, after Evan Liddie Was hit-by-pitch and Langford walked. A two-out double for Barry Eiseman plated the fourth run of the inning as the Falcons took an 11-3 lead. RBI singles from Jake Smallwood, Liddie and Langford plated four more runs and put UM ahead 15-3.

Shorter picked up a run on an RBI single in the top of the sixth but UM took it back when Langford recorded his fourth hit of the day, a single through the left side to score Zen Hiatt. Teel's sixth RBI of the day scored Liddies on a single to push UM to a 17-4 advantage.

Jake O'Connell closed out the win in the seventh as the Hawks went three up, three down.

With the win, UM snapped a two-game losing skid and improved to 16-3 on the year and 6-1 in the league. Montevallo is currently in first place in the GSC.
