No. 6 Falcons Stay Hot in 14-6 Win Over AUM to Complete the Sweep

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The No. 6 University of Montevallo baseball team improved to 21-4 on the season and 10-2 in Gulf South Conference play with a 14-6 win over AUM, Sunday, to complete the series sweep.

With the sweep, the Falcons finish the week 4-0 following a massive outing from the plate in which the squad totaled 57 runs in the four-game stretch.

On Sunday, Montevallo's hot offense carried over from Saturday's doubleheader sweep as the team added 14 runs in the win. The scoring onslaught began in the second inning when Jake Smallwood grounded into a double play with the bases loaded to score Asa Awbrey, giving UM an early 1-0 lead.

An RBI double from Sam Kuchinski and an Awbrey sacrifice fly pushed Montevallo ahead 3-0 in the top of the third. In the bottom of the frame, AUM matched the Falcons with a three-run homer to even the score 3-3.

Montevallo broke the game open in the fourth as Ben Teel answered AUM with a three-run homer of his own – his fourth of the series – to double up the Warhawks, 6-3.

The Falcons continued adding runs in the fifth frame as a sacrifice fly from Smallwood scored Awbrey to begin the inning. Next, an AUM throwing error scored Barry Eiseman before a bases-loaded walk by Kuchinksi gave the Falcons a 10-3 lead.

A solo homer from Zen Hiatt, his second of the season, pushed UM's lead to eight, 11-3 in the sixth. In the bottom of the inning, AUM took the run back with a solo homer of its own, trimming Montevallo's lead to seven, 11-4.

After AUM added a pair of runs in the seventh to make it an 11-6 contest, Montevallo plated three more runs in the ninth. A two-RBI single from Reed Latimer pushed the lead to 13-6 before Will LaFollete delivered a pinch-hit RBI double to score Kuchinski and increase the lead to eight, 14-6.

Chris Foster finished off the win on the mound as he pitched two scoreless innings from the bullpen and struck out three batters, including two to end the game.
