No.4/No.6 Montevallo Wins Fifth Straight 9-1 Over Miles at Rickwood

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The No. 4/No. 6 University of Montevallo baseball team defeated Miles College 9-1, Tuesday, at historic Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama.
 
The win is UM's fifth straight and moves the record to 22-4 overall.
 
Sam Kuchinski, the reigning Gulf South Conference player of the week turned in a notable performance at the plate as he reached base five times with four walks and a double. He also stole a base and scored three runs.
 
The scoring began when Reed Latimer drove a ball to right-field to double and score Kuchinski. After Asa Awbrey reached on an error that scored Latimer, Barry Eiseman singled and Awbrey scored on another Miles error.
 
Following a scoreless second inning, Khalid Collymore hit his first homer of the year and blasted a two-run shot to right to push UM's lead to 5-0.
 
In the fourth, Latimer's second double of the day put the side ahead 6-0.
 
Through four innings, the pitching combo of Dylan Freeman and Gino Cozzi kept Miles off the board with only two hits allowed and four strikeouts combined.
 
An RBI single from Awbrey in the sixth added another run for UM as the lead grew to seven, 7-0.
 
In the top of the seventh, Evan Liddie added an RBI when he doubled to right center to make it an 8-0 advantage for UM. Liddie added his second hit of the day and another RBI with a single in the ninth to push the lead to 9-0.

Miles grabbed its lone run in the bottom of the ninth on a passed ball.

  • Montevallo scored nine runs on 13 hits and has now scored at least nine runs in each of the last five games.
  • The Falcons improve to 22-4 on the season and are currently on a five-game win streak with the win.
  • The UM pitching staff combined for eight scoreless innings, gave up three hits and allowed just one run throughout the game. The Falcons struck out 13 Miles batters in the win.
  • Dyaln Freeman earned the start and combined for four scoreless innings, two hits and three K's with Gino Cozzi who pitched a pair of innings in relief.
  • Connor Phelan was dominant out of the bullpen late when he struck out four batters through one and two-thirds innings pitched and didn't allow a baserunner.
  • Khalid finished 3-for-5 from the plate and he drove in two runs, hit a homer and had a double.
  • Reed Latimer notched a pair of RBI doubles to finish 2-for-3 on the day.
  • Sam Kuchinski reached base each time he stepped to the plate as he drew four walks and went 1-for-1 with a double. He scored three runs.
  • Kuchinski's four walks tied a Montevallo record for walks in a game that is held by several players, most recently Will Fulmer in 2014.
