MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The No. 4/No. 5 University of Montevallo baseball team extended its win streak to six with a 5-4 win over West Alabama, Friday, in Montevallo, Alabama.
A two-out four-run rally in the fifth and a go-ahead RBI bunt in the eighth proved to be enough to overcome a game in which they made three errors defensively, for the 23
rd win of the year.
In the bottom of the eighth with the score tied 4-4,
Evan Liddie laid down a bunt to push
Matt Simon across the plate and give Montevallo its first lead of the game 5-4. The bunt proved to be the winning RBI for Liddie and the Falcons as
Connor Phelan kept UWA off the board in the ninth, earning his second win of the season.
West Alabama opened the scoring in the first inning when they pushed across a run on a bases-loaded fielder's choice. In the top of the second, the Tigers extended the lead to 3-0 with a pair of unearned runs.
The visitors continued to score and keep the Falcons off the board in the top of the fourth when Houston Kitterman hit a solo home run to make it a 4-0 game.
Logan Samuels and
Jake O'Connell kept the Tigers' bats quiet in the top of the fifth. In the bottom of the frame, UM finally found its way into the scoring column. With two outs,
Ben Teel and
Sam Kuchinski each drew walks, bringing
Reed Latimer to the plate. The Scottsboro, Alabama native then drilled his eighth homer of the year, deep to center, to make it a one-run game, 4-3. In the next at-bat, a double from
Asa Awbrey kept the inning alive before a
Luke Mitchell double scored the senior and evened the score 4-4.
Zach Toth replaced O'Connell and pitched two and a third scoreless, and hitless, innings, while striking out three, to hold the tie.
With two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, Liddie delivered his RBI bunt single to score Simon and put UM on top 5-4. The lead was the first of the game for UM.
Connor Phelan finished out the win on the mound, holding off the Tigers, and earned his second win of the year to improve to 2-0.
With the win, UM is now 23-4 overall on the season and remains in first place of the Gulf South Conference at 11-2.
