PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Montevallo softball team drop the first of a three-game series with West Florida, 6-2, on Friday.
The Falcons looked to strike early with a leadoff single from
Shelby Sloan on the first pitch of the game.
Taylor Robinson would reach in the next at-bat, but three-straight outs would strand the two runners in the top of the first.
West Florida took a 1-0 lead after an RBI double in the bottom of the first.
Montevallo's
Ariana Pinder threw a 1-2-3 inning in the second after the Falcons failed to produce a baserunner in the top half.
The Argos stretched the lead out to 3-0 with a two RBI double in the third and looked to add more runs in the fourth but Montevallo's pitching staff closed the inning with two runners on.
UWF's offense tacked on two more runs in the fifth to go up 5-0 heading to the sixth. Following two walks to start the inning, Robinson reached on a UWF error that scored
Olivia Bergert for Montevallo's first run of the game. The Falcons couldn't cut into the lead any further as three-consecutive outs left two runners on.
After West Florida scored a sixth run in the bottom of the sixth, Montevallo fell to its last out. A pair of singles from
Georgia Hughes and Bergert, followed by a walk from Sloan, loaded the bases for the Falcons. Robinson drove in Hughes with a walk to trim the score to 6-2. One final Falcon strike out ended Montevallo's comeback effort and game one of the series.
