No. 8 Montevallo Blanks UAH 5-0 in Game One, Walks Off Game Two 2-1

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The No. 8 ranked University of Montevallo baseball team extended its win streak to 12 and improved to 15-1 with a pair of wins over UAH, Saturday, in a doubleheader.
 
Montevallo opened the afternoon with a 5-0 shutout victory before Sam Kuchinski blasted a homer in the bottom of the seventh for a walk-off win in game two, 2-1.
 
GAME ONE
 
After three scoreless frames, the game's first runs were scored when Alex Langford singled threw the right side and scored freshman Luke Mitchell to give UM an early 1-0 lead.
 
The bats became hot in the bottom of the third when tallied three hits and scored a pair of runs. First, Sam Kuchinski blasted a homer to left center. In the next at-bat, Reed Latimer doubled and was driven in on an RBI single up the middle from Asa Awbrey.


In his fifth start of the year, Logan Samuels fanned two in the top of the fourth to hold UAH scoreless.
 
Montevallo added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to add to its lead. Awbrey and Mitchell drilled back-to-back solo homers to extend the lead to five, 5-0.
 
Griffin Lape replaced Samuels in the fifth and went on to pitch two scoreless innings with a pair of K's.
 
The final four innings were scoreless for both sides as Danny Glenos finished off the win for UM out of the bullpen, going one and two-thirds innings with two strikeouts.
 
Samuels earned the win and finished the day with five punchouts. The shutout was the third of the year for UM's pitching staff.

GAME ONE NOTES 
  • Montevallo compiled 10 hits on five runs in the shutout win and went yard three times – each of them solo shots.
  • Sam Kuchinski led the way as he finished 3-for-5 with an RBI.
  • Asa Awbrey led the Falcons with two RBI in the win and was 2-for-3 from the plate.
  • UM's bullpen combined for nine strikeouts and gave up just seven hits with no runs allowed for the third shutout of the year.
  • Logan Samuels improved to 3-0 as he totaled five K's in a scoreless performance over five and third innings.
  • Kuchinski, Awbrey and freshman Luke Mitchell each hit solo homers in the win.
GAME TWO
  
In game two, the Falcons entered a pitcher's duel with the Chargers but were able to strike first, and last.
 
Luke Mitchell put the Falcons on the board when he hit his second homer of the day in the bottom of the second inning.
 
The next two innings were scoreless as UM's JJ Pease and UAH's Andre Orselli dominated the mound.
 
In the top of the fifth, UAH evened the score 1-1 on an RBI single.
 
Following the score, Reilly Kirkpatrick turned in a solid performance on the mound in relief, striking out two in the sixth. In the seventh, Connor Phelan entered from the bullpen and quickly sat down the chargers in order and held the 1-1 tie going into the bottom of the inning.
 
Sam Kuchinski led off the bottom of the seventh. He quickly fell behind in the count 0-2 but worked the count back to even after a string of foul balls and some patience at the plate. Then, the third baseman blasted a deep shot to left center field for the walk off win. The homer was his second on the say and seventh of the year.
