MONTEVALLO, Ala. – University of Montevallo men's swimming's
Will Mahone is set to compete in the NCAA Division II National Championships on Friday, Mar. 10 and Saturday Mar. 11.
Mahone, a senior and the first person in program history to qualify for nationals, will compete in the 100-yard backstroke on Mar. 10 and the 200-yard backstroke on Mar. 11. He is the schools record holder in both events.
The national championships are hosted by Indianapolis University and will take place at the IU Natatorium on the campus of Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis.
To make it to the championships, Mahone posted a time of 47.68 in the 100-yard backstroke at the New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference Championships. The Lilburn, Georgia native also posted a qualifying time in the 200-yard backstroke as he set the school record in the event as well with a time of 1:46.09, to secure a ticket to nationals in both events.
Mahone enters the national championship meet with the 12
th-best time in the 100-yard backstroke and the 16
th-best time in the 200-yard back stroke.
The championships will be streamed live at NCAA.com and results can be found there as well. Mahone will compete in the prelims of the 100-yard backstroke at 9 a.m. on Mar. 10 and must finish ahead of 12 swimmers, or top-16, to qaulify for the finals at 6 p.m. Prelims for the 200-yard backstroke is at 9 a.m. on Mar. 11 with the finals at 6 p.m.
