No. 13 Falcons Drop Game One to Delta State, 7-3

MONTEVALLO, Ala. –  The No. 13 Montevallo Falcons opened a weekend series against Delta State with a 7-3 loss, Friday, at Kermit A. Johnson Field.

The Falcons fell behind early following home runs in bottom of the first and second innings for the Statesman, to trail 5-0.

UM's bats were quiet until the fifth frame when back-to-back singles from freshmen Luke Mitchell and Christian Kallaher and a walk from Jake Smallwood loaded the bases. A Khalid Collymore walk scored Mitchell for UM's first run of the game. Delta State's lead was then trimmed to three when Ben Teel was hit-by-pitch.

DSU quickly answered Montevallo in the top of the sixth and picked up a pair of runs to lead 7-2.

A rally looked promising in the bottom of the eighth as Sam Kuchinski led off the inning with a solo homer to right that smacked off the scoreboard – his 12th of the year. Reed Latimer followed up the solo-shot with a single, but three straight popups ended the inning.

Neither side gave up a run the rest of the way as the Falcons fell to 14-8 in league play and 30-10 overall with the 7-3 loss.
