Homers Propel No. 13 UM to Doubleheader Sweep, Series Win, Over Delta

MONTEVALLO, Ala. –  The No. 13 University of Montevallo baseball team swept Delta State in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon to move to 32-10 overall.
 
 
With the sweep, UM takes the series 2-1 and moves back into a tie for first in the Gulf South Conference at 16-8 with six games remaining.
 
 
The Falcons earned a 9-8 win in game one of the day and put the Statesman away 10-1 in the rubber match.
 
Sam Kuchinski homered twice on the day and extended his hit streak to 17 games. He finished the day with three hits and five RBI.
 
 
 
GAME ONE
 
In a 9-8 slugfest Saturday afternoon in game one of the doubleheader, the No. 13 Falcons defeated Delta State for the 31st win of the year.
 
Delta State struck first, scoring two in the first frame, before Montevallo answered with three in the bottom of the inning. Reed Latimer opened the scoring with a two-run homer before an RBI double from Luke Mitchell put the Falcons ahead 3-2.
 
The Statesman added three more in the second to jump in front, 5-2. Ben Teel recorded an RBI single and Sam Kuchinski homered to vault UM to a 6-5 advantage in response.
 
The homeruns continued to come for the falcons in the fourth inning when Asa Awbrey crushed a ball to right field to give UM a 9-5 lead.
 
DSU added three runs down the stretch but Connor Phelan held off the Statesman over the final inning and a third by not allowing a baserunner for his fourth save of the year.

 GAME ONE NOTES
  • Montevallo scored nine runs on 10 hits while Delta State added eight runs on nine hits.
  • The bullpen shined for UM in the win as Zach Toth, Chris Foster and Connor Phelan faced a combined 28 batters, allowed just one hit, no runs, and struck out four in seven innings pitched.
  • Asa Awbrey led UM with five runs in the win as he, Sam Kuchinski and Reed Latimer each went yard.
  • Toth earned the win to move to 6-1 overall while Phelan picked up his fourth save.
     
 
GAME TWO
 
Montevallo jumped head of Delta State rather quickly in game two when Latimer scored Kuchinski on an RBI single in the first.
 
In the second, Montevallo scored anyway they could and added seven runs on just three hits in the frame. The rally began when Luke Mitchell scored on a throwing error following a Jake Smallwood fielders' choice. An Evan Liddie groundout pushed Barry Eiseman across before a Kuchinski hit-by-pitch added the innings' third run. Up next, Reed Latimer blasted a grandslam to left center to give UM an 8-0 lead.
 
Homeruns remained a theme throughout and that continued when Delta Sate added a solo shot in the fourth for their lone run.
 
Montevallo got the run back plus one in the bottom of the sixth when Kuchinski homered for the third time in the series and the 14th time of the year to lead 10-1.
 
Logan Samuels allowed just four baserunner in his start as he struck out four, gave up just three hits and one run in 20 batters faced. He pitched five innings for his fifth win of the year.
