Kuchinski Homer Completes Comeback Bid, Lifts UM Over MC, 9-8

MONTEVALLO, Ala. –  The No. 10 University of Montevallo baseball team completed an eight-run comeback to defeat Mississippi College, 9-8, Friday in Montevallo, Ala., to take game one of the series.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Sam Kuchinski delivered a three-run homer, his 15th of the year, a line drive to left center, to vault the Falcons in front, 9-8.

Prior to Kuchinski's bomb, the Falcons struggled offensively and trailed 8-1 in the bottom of the seventh. UM's lone run to that point came on an RBI single from Ben Teel in the third. Montevallo then broke the bats open in the seventh when Teel recorded a two-RBI single to score a pair for UM. Next, Reed Latimer drove in two on a homer and cut the deficit to three, 8-5. In the eighth, Khalid Collymore recorded a two-out RBI single to put Montevallo within two, giving way for Kuchinski's go-ahead bomb.

Connor Phelan entered from the bullpen in the ninth and pitched a clean inning to earn his fifth save of the year and secure the 9-8 win for the home side.

With the win, the Falcons move to 33-10 overall on the year and are now currently in sole possession of first place at 17-8 in league play.
