Falcons Split Twin Bill With Delta State

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo softball spilt a doubleheader with Delta State after playing 19 innings on Saturday, April 15. 
 
GAME ONE
The fans at Orr Park got free softball in game one as Delta State just barely edged out Montevallo 5-4 after 12 innings of action. 
 
After a fast first inning, DSU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with an RBI double in the second. 
 
With Taylor Lloyd on the mound, the Falcons defense limited the Lady Statesmen to just three hits while the Falcons' bats caught up to DSU's pitching. 
 
With the same 2-0 score in the bottom of the sixth, Shelby Sloan's first triple of the season put a runner in scoring position with no outs. Two batters later, pinch runner Bentlee Stiner scored Montevallo's first run of the day off a sac fly from Alisha Lanyon. 
 
Lloyd kept Delta State out of the scoring column in the seventh to give Montevallo three outs to tie the game. 
 
In the very first at bat of the inning, Sydnee Reaves' tenth home run of the season tied the game at 2 and sent the game into extra innings.
 
The pitching duel continued in the eighth and ninth with both squads producing just one base runner. 
 
With the automatic base runner beginning in the tenth, Delta State took the lead following a Falcon miscommunication in the infield before Montevallo tied the game with a sacrifice bunt from Ellie Derrick in the bottom of the inning. 
 
An RBI double from DSU gave the Lady Statesmen a 4-3 lead to start the 11th before the Falcons defense came up with two outs. A pair of sac bunts from Montevallo scored Lauren Higginbotham and tie the game at 4-4 and send the game to the 12th. 
 
Delta State needed a two-out single in the top of the 12th to score the runner and, after Montevallo failed to score in the bottom, take the game 5-4.

  • The Falcons' 12-inning game one is tied for the most innings played in a single game in Montevallo softball history. 
  • Taylor Lloyd's 11.0 innings pitched are the most in program-history with the right hander allowing just two earned runs on 10 hits with eight K's.
 
GAME TWO
Montevallo's bats got hot in game two with the Falcons scoring six runs en route to a 6-4 victory in game two. 
 
Delta State jumped out to another 2-0 lead with a two-run home run in the top of the first. 
 
Montevallo answered with a four run second sparked by a lead-off single from Sydnee Reaves. A pair of walks loaded the bases with no outs and Shelby Sloan stepping up to the plate. Sloan blasted one over the left center fence for her ninth home run of the season. With one swing, Falcons took a 4-2 lead. 
 
Montevallo's defense gave up a run in the top of the fourth before a fifth RBI from Sloan moved the score to 5-3 after four. 
 
After Brittany Crowson retired the side, back-to-back doubles from Reaves and Stone lifted the Falcons to a 6-3 lead. 
 
Delta State loaded the bases in the top of the sixth but Montevallo's defense held the Lady Statesmen to just one run.
 
Crowson kept DSU off the board in seventh to give Montevallo the win, 6-4, and move to 7-6 on the season.

  • Montevallo scored its six runs on nine hits with six RBI, four doubles, and one homer.
  • Senior outfielder Shelby Sloan headlined the Falcons' offense with five RBI on 2-for-4 at the plate with a grand slam. 
  • Alisha Lanyon, Sydnee Reaves, Lily Stone, and Olivia Bergert each had a double with Lanyon and Reaves going 2-for-3 at the plate. 
  • Brittany Crowson earned her seventh win of the season with 4.0 inning appearance while allowing just two earned runs on four hits. 
 
 
UP NEXT: The Falcons will close out the series with Delta State with a game on Sunday, April 16 at 1 p.m.
