Montevallo Blows Past MC for Series Sweep on Senior Day

MONTEVALLO, Ala. –  The No. 10 University of Montevallo baseball team blew past Mississippi College, 12-8 and 18-6 in a doubleheader, Saturday, to complete the series sweep.
 
 
With the wins, Montevallo moves its record to 35-10 on the year and remains in a tie for first place in the Gulf South Conference.
 
In the Senior Day wins, the Falcons had a combined 29 hits, 30 runs, seven homers and eight extra-base hits.
 
GAME ONE
 
Montevallo struck first in game one when Asa Awbrey hit a solo homer in the bottom of the second. With a homer of their own in the next frame, Mississippi College quickly answered back the Falcons to go ahead 3-1.
 
A sacrifice fly and fielders choice RBI for Jake Smallwood and Evan Liddie, respectively, got the two runs back and tied the game 3-3.
 
In the top of the fifth, MC briefly regained the lead, 5-4, before the Falcons posted a four spot in the bottom of the frame. The rally began with an RBI single for Sam Kuchinski before a two-run homer from Reed Latimer made it a 6-4 game. Smallwood then added his second sac fly of the game to make it 7-4 in favor of the Falcons.  
 
The third sacrifice fly of the day for the Falcons, this time from Kuchinski, brought in another run and put the Falcons ahead 8-4.
 
MC didn't go away, however, and added four runs in the seventh to tie the Falcons 8-8.
 
In the bottom of the eighth another RBI from Teel pushed UM in front, 9-8. Kuchinksi then doubled to add another run as the Falcons led 10-9. An ensuing double from Latimer scored two more as UM grabbed a four-run lead, 12-8.
 
Connor Phelan earned his fifth win of the year on the mound and closed out the victory in the ninth.

 GAME ONE NOTES
  • Montevallo scored 12 runs on 11 hits while Mississippi College plated eight runs on 16 hits.
  • The Falcons totaled four doubles and two homers for six extra-base knocks in the win and had sac flies.
  • Reed Latimer was the RBI leader as he went 2-for-5 with four RBI.
  • Ben Teel had a team-high three hits and was 3-for-5 with an RBI.
  • Connor Phelan improved to 5-1 on the year on the mound.
 
 
GAME TWO
 
Montevallo's bats exploded for 18 runs on 18 hits in game two of the doubleheader. The Falcons jacked four homers and added three doubles and a triple in the win.
 
The game began with a seven-spot in the first inning for the Falcons. Teel opened it up with a two-run homer before a two-base error scored another Falcon run. A two-RBI single from Luke Mitchell scored two more and gave UM a 5-0 advantage. A balk added the sixth run and Khalid Collymore drove in the seventh on a sacrifice fly.
 
In the second, Mitch Fleming drilled a three-run homer to push UM ahead 10-4 - his first homer of the year.
 
Teel added a double in the third to score a run ahead of another homer from Latimer to make the score 13-4.
 
In the fourth, Teel homered again to push the lead to 12, 16-4. Latimer added another RBI as well when he singled to make it 17-4. Following Latimer, Asa Awbrey doubled to right center to score one and give the Falcons its 18th run of the game.
 
MC added two more in the fifth to cut the score to 18-6.
 
Brooks Cooner finished out the win on the mound as the Falcons took the series sweep with an 18-6 win.
 
JJ Pease pitched in relief and earned the win to move to 6-1 overall on the year.

  • Ben Teel finished a triple shy of the cycle and had six RBI as he went 4-for-5 from the plate with two homers and a double.
  • JJ Pease pitched two innings in relief and earned the win, his sixth of the year.
