MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo softball team upset No. 18 Mississippi College, 11-8, with late game heroics on Senior Day.
The Falcons jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Senior
Shelby Sloan singled into left field and was brought home two batters later with a
Sydnee Reaves two-run bomb over the leftfield fence.
Montevallo walked in a run in the second before another two-run inning lifted the Falcons to a 4-1 advantage. With multiple MC miscues,
Lily Stone scored from second while
Olivia Bergert moved over to third.
Maddie Taylor singled through the right side of the infield to score Montevallo's second run of the inning.
The Lady Choctaws took the lead with a grand slam in the top of third before adding two more runs in the fourth after Montevallo's lone scoreless inning.
The Falcons moved Bergert into scoring position in the fifth with a pair of sacrifice hits. Senior
Taylor Robinson's RBI single cut into the lead with the Falcons still trailing, 7-5, after the fourth.
MC stretched the lead back to three with a single run in the fifth before Montevallo catcher
Lily Stone singled in the infield to score
Alisha Lanyon from second before scoring a run of her own on an MC throw to second.
Montevallo kept the Lady Choctaws off the board in the sixth to go into bottom of the inning trailing 8-7. A lead-off single from Sloan got UM's bats going before a second Montevallo two-run homer, this time from Lanyon, gave the Falcons a 9-8 advantage. A Reaves walk followed by another Stone single put two runners on with just one out.
Lauren Higginbotham's two-RBI single in a pinch hit at-bat gave the Falcons its final 11-8 score.
Senior righthander
Brittany Crowson earned the win on Senior Day with a 3.1 inning performance with just one earned run on four hits.
