Box Score CARROLLTON, Ga. – Montevallo dropped came one of the series against West Georgia, 9-8, on the road, Friday.
The Falcons fell behind 8-1 to the Wolves early but responded with seven unanswered runs to tie the home side 8-8. However, UM's 15 hits wasn't-enough as the Wolves added a run in the eighth to take the game one win.
To open the game, the Falcons loaded the bases with the top of the order when
Ben Teel and
Sam Kuchinski delivered back-to-back singles. Next,
Reed Latimer grounded into a double play, allowing
Khalid Collymore to score and give UM the early 1-0 lead.
In the third, West Georgia's bats came alive as the Wolves score eight runs on seven hits in the frame to lead UM 8-1.
Montevallo responded to the Wolves in the top of the first when
Jake Smallwood doubled to right center to drive in a pair, cutting the deficit to five, 8-3. With two outs in the inning, Collymore singled up the middle to drive in the Falcons' fourth run of the game, cutting UWG's lead in half.
To lead off the sixth inning, Smallwood added his third RBI of the day with a solo homer, his second of the year, to make it 8-5. A wild pitch then scored Collymore to cut UWG's lead to two, 8-6, before a balk scored
Ben Teel and made it a one-run game, 8-7.
With an
Evan Liddie RBI single in the seventh, Montevallo scored its seventh straight unanswered run to tie the Wolves 8-8.
Chris Foster returned to the mound for his second relief inning of the day in the seventh and struck out the side to hold the 8-8 tie.
An RBI single in the eighth lifted West Georgia in front 9-8.
In the ninth, the Falcons were unable to complete the comeback, falling 9-8 in game one of the series.
UM falls to 19-9 overall in the Gulf South Conference standings and currently sits in second place, one game back of West Florida.
